Barber Shop Surprise

I got a haircut today and as I was paying the guy at the register on the way out, he looked at my wrist and said, "Hmm, Sub or GMT?"  I said it was a Sub and I noticed that his wrists were bare, which seemed strange for a Rolex guy. "I don't wear my watches in here," he said. Then he showed me a picture of one on his phone -- a Daytona he got for $25,000. I said you might not wear a Rolex to work if you dig ditches or something, but you can't damage it cutting hair. He said he may wear his Yacht Master sometime.

I suspect this isn't just one of the barbers but the owner, because he's at the chair next to the cash register and is almost always the one who takes your money. This is a barber shop with 7-8 barbers, all Russians, on Fulton Street in Manhattan.

I know some young people in their 20s who are working in McDonald's also wear SUB or other Rolex in HK.

One block from my apt, I’d go scope out his wrist but he doesn’t wear a watch. Fun story.

Since the pandemic started my new barber is my wife. She wears a Datejust.

Gotta respect hardworking folks who are able to reap the benefits of their hard work.

The top barbers at my shop in NYC wear hulk, batman, and AP chrono. Maybe I should get my barber license LOL.

I know early 20s who have taken out loans to wear a full gold Skydweller or DD40 or Platinum Daytona.

The young guys these days got their priorities all wrong. They are still working as entry level jobs or still studying with absolutely ZERO to their name yet wearing a watch bought with a loan usually worn by highly established and successful business men and investors.

Absolute bonkers if you ask me.

Barber Shop Surprise

I overheard a barber brag how he ‘milked the system’ and worked through the pandemic while collecting unemployment. =/

Can't agree more. I had my first Rolex in mid 30s after working hard and save money for a long time

So millions wear Rolex watches every day worldwide in all walks of life and employment.

No issue with people spending their money how ever they want. If the barber wants a Rolex and can afford it, good for him.

Agreed, I was told a long time ago beauticians & morticians who work hard can write their own ticket.

How do they get these loans? I can't imagine the feeling has to be good when you're still paying for that watch.

I know a woman that’s a hair stylist that makes around 200k a year, she bought the shop she used to rent a booth in. She’s got a loyal following and is even branching out and starting other businesses at different locations. Definitely not surprising your barber owns a few Rolex IMO.

My hair stylist is a Korean immigrant. Owns 4 houses, drives a Lexus. She says she doesn't even really need to keep cutting hair, just likes it; the work, clients and conversation. She was smart and put her money into investment rental properties (and this is in a very expensive part of California.)
