What’s your take on the American Psycho Rolex not being a Rolex in the film after all

So…it turns out to be a Seiko that the character Patrick Bateman wore in the movie. How about that? Just cracks me up…what’s you guys opinion on this?

I'm pretty sure it was a Rolex in the book and the line was "don't touch the Rolex". Imagine it was changed for the film due to fear of being sued.

I really feel like a dumb a** for not seeing the lack of cyclops on the watch in the movie!

I surely was among those who thought it was a DJ. But I think this proves the importance of context when it comes to really examining something as an item rather than a part of whole. P Bateman wore is as a DJ, everything else pointed to the same direction. Cudos to SEIKO, rolex stunt watch

In any event I can’t think of a movie where a genuine Rolex was ever used unless it belonged to the actor?

I don't understand why they need permission from Rolex to use their watch. Look at any other movie and the watches being used. You see Rolex being used so frequently in the 60s/70s/80s.

More Seiko models, including divers, dress watches and digital, have been used in James Bond movies than any other brand, as far as I know.

What’s your take on the American Psycho Rolex not being a Rolex in the film after all

The conversation has come up from time to time on TRF. Some debates, some conjectures.

I don’t think the line in the movie was changed from “Rolex” to “watch” due to a threatened lawsuit. Even back when the book was written, brands were paying for prominent placements. Rolex was probably approached like the other well-known brands.

Brand chart from the book.

Purely a guess, but very likely Rolex wasn’t delighted with the opportunity for that product placement.

Using only the sort of “influence” that they could muster, they likely labored and lobbied to keep their brand name out of the film.

I believe in an older thread here we saw photos showing a cyclops in an office scene.

Perhaps Bale’s petulance to slip in “real” for “ringer”?

IMHO, more than one type of watch graced the psychopath’s wrist while filming the movie.
