New GS Limited Editions Announced

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/th...-pics-and-pric

Essentially an SBGW231 with a different dial. I wonder if they fixed the QC issue regarding bubbles under the crystal that some members reported on here.

More releases, more choices, too many watches.

I agree. Although some people appreciate LE and more choice, I for one think that GS are overdoing it. They are repurposing dials in many references with small variations (e.g. colour), which I think ends up making them less special. A good example of this is the amazing Birch dial being repurposed in SBGJ249. All they did was change the colour and rotate it by 90 degrees.

They are falling into a trap.

Get some success.

Build more and more watches

Raise prices

Leads to failure.

They need to stop.

Is this an attempted haiku?

They sold out in an hour. Seriously. Call an AD and ask for one, see what they tell you. Also call and ask for the SLGA007 while you’re at it. Gone.

This part sounds like just about every brand out there.

Of course, some brands will fail, time will tell.

So did Panerai LE…

Until they didn’t

Less is more.

Generally agree, too many LEs, many of which are too similar to one another.

With that said, love the latest release of green dials, they all look stunning.

I don’t disagree there are way too many. I don’t think comparing to Panerai makes sense. It was a different time. I also have trouble telling the difference between any two panerai. I get having a design language (see Royal oak) but the monotony over at panerai is something else.

IMO Grand Seiko doesn’t release LEs because that is the way they think they’ll make money. It’s rather probably their way of building product portfolio.

They had been placing small releases long before decided to go global. Look at all Japanese Domestic Market releases for big department stores in Tokyo, Osaka and sometimes in other cities. Or LEs for their four ADs in Ginza district.

As an argument supporting my above thesis look at the case of the Whirlpool. Or Kiku. Wouldn’t it make sense to release same designs in more colours? For other brands probably yes. But GS is seeking its own, more sophisticated way.

For me all the limited editions, especially the really limited ones (like the black snowflake released this Spring in 38 pcs for Oomiya AD in Osaka), are a huge magnet which attracts me to this brand.

And then once per 1-2 years they run a LE which is usually fantastic and available worldwide.

I think they're cool, but the SBGW231 stands on it's own and doesn't need these cousins.

FYI, with regard to the SLGA007 being gone, GS9 Members can still order it online as of the time of this post. Nice to see GS taking care of their owners.
