She always watches these foodie shows as background noise and I finally told her I have more respect for an decent pastry chef than a top cook.

She asked why?

I said getting everyone to agree on sweet perfection and texture is harder than the many varieties for cooking styles and flares.

A pastry or dessert chef is almost like a chemist or alchemist and one small error in temperature or measurements can either perfect or ruin a final product.

Where a cook can just add more butter or salt.

I cook and bake and have been baking for almost 15 years before the covid fad. I love both. I bake breads, lots of sourdough, cookies and cakes, and I make my own pizza from scratch. I just received my new wood fire pizza oven, so I'm excited to get that arranged outside and get started with it.

Cooking is an art, and there is a lot of leeway and flexibility with flavor and recipes, temps, etc.

Baking is witchcraft. Baking requires precision measurements and fine tuning of ingredients to achieve consistent AND repeatable results because chemical reactions are taking place.

The best bakers weigh their ingredients to create consistency and to remove human error from the alchemy. Scales don't lie and once you start weighing your ingredients it is like a weight is lifted from your shoulders. Suddenly you use fewer utensils, and you can just get something out, quickly weigh it, and move on. It's so much easier. Your results are repeatable, too.

I have a lot of respect for chefs and they are masters in their realm, but master bakers and pastry chefs are wizards and witches. There's no other way to describe it. 🪄

First, I can't believe someone married you, and yes you're ALWAYS wrong. If you are married, didn't you get the Official Handbook titled, "You're Married, And You're Wrong"?

Baking is indeed a science. Some of the recipes I have made, make me think "Who in the hell came up with this stuff?" Although it's a science, the delivery is an art.

Cooking can be ( and usually is for me ) off the cuff if you understand some basics and flavor profiles.

Chewy... yes you were wrong. Even if you were 100% correct, you were wrong. I do like the beer and ibuprofen explanation... that is thinking on your feet right there.
