Incoming…my first PP to complete my new 50th BDay 3 watches collection

Hi all,

It’s my 50th this year and after many years of wearing an old collection, I’ve decided to get a new collection going, even though it’s bad timing given the cheesy state of the watch market. I have been wearing these three for many years - a Rolex Explorer II which I worn for my wedding, a Baume & Mercier Hampton that was the first mechanical watch I bought after landing a new job and my dad’s 60 years old Girard Perregaux Gryomatic vintage. They together with my Apple Watch have served me week throughout the years but it’s time for a new collection.

After some time looking around, I have decided on a Tudor BB GMT. I travel quite a bit and use the hour jumping function a lot, plus the GMT function let me keep track of my home time time zone. Tudor definitely hit a home run with this. Great build, the Pepsi bezel, the snow flake hands and clean dial. The only complain is that it’s a little thick for my small wrist but I also love the solid hefty feel.

While I was picking up the Tudor, I visited the Rolex AD (not the same dealer) and saw this OP Date with Blue dial. I always enjoy wearing my dad’s watch and always thought that I want a vintage Rolex, but this watch being a modern Rolex with vintage size is even better. I did think about getting a DJ 36, but this one actually have more of a vintage feel. The Blue dial is speculator and the size. It’s so hard to just go into a Rolex Boutique and found a watch that fits what the configuration these days, so I felt super lucky to be able to walk out with the watch I want.

After getting 2 watches, my wife thought I was done. HOWEVER, I always knew that I want a Patek. I know there’s a hot sport watch market out there, but I want a more classic, dressy style watch and true to Patek’s long history. It completes this 3 watch collection with one sport, one every day and one dressy watch. I thought of and tried several different reference, went back and forth between 5146 and 5396, and in the end, decided that the 5146G-010 was the best combination. The grey slate dial is not exactly classic Patek silver or white dial, but I love the more modern look. The annual calendar complication, with noon phase and power reserve is just so awesome. After finally own a Patek, I can now see why its a just a step above Rolex. Don’t get me wrong, I still love and want a few other Rolex sport model, but Patek is just at a new level. I found an AD who has one and just picked it up yesterday. Can’t be more excited.

There you have it. My new 50th birthday watch collection. Well enough talk here. Let’s look at some watches…

Congratulation. 5146 is a versatile watch, and I love the power reserve indicator.

Thanks. Me too. The power reserve was one of the reasons I picked the 5146. It’s so nice to have that complication.

Nice one. The 5146 is classic PP all the way; and in white metal is easy to wear with just about anything, which is not as true about some of the other annual calendars, the 5396 included.

The OP Date is 34mm, but it wears big. On the other hand, the 5146 wears smaller than its 39mm case, which include the curve of the lugs. You can see how the 5146 is only marginally bigger and not as the big of the difference you would have expected between the two.

Yes, just great balance of a classic Patek design but still versatile enough to wear it with jeans. The 5396 was supposed to be 38.5mm but wear bigger than the 39mm 5146, so I decide to go with this.

Congratulations and happy birthday.
The 5146g is such a cool watch and I’ve always liked that configuration as well as the slate 5146P. We know it’s a Patek, but the 5146 in white metal looks like a field watch and I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s great that it flies under the radar.
No one will probably tell you “nice Patek”, but that’s what the forum is for.
I agree on the BB GMT, it’s thick, especially coming from a 16570.
I’m hoping Tudor will make a BB58 GMT, as I like the BB58 case size better.
Wear them in good health in the decades to come.

Agree on the 5146. I prefer the "under the radar aspect" of the WG + Slate dial combo and don't need to show off the watch in the public. Yes, that's why we are here in this forum

A BB58 with GMT complication would be nice, but judging from the thick BB Chrono or even just the BB Date, I doubt that will happen anytime soon. I had the chance to buy either or both the BB GMT and the BB58 at my AD. Ultimately, I decided that I want the GMT function with a rotating bezel, and the different feel than my 16570. Despite its thickness, I enjoy the substantial wrist present when I out and about.
