Hi all - long time reader, first time contributor.

It’s been 6 years since I decided the Submariner was the watch for me, but I wasn’t in a position to make that kind of purchase at the time.

Instead, I bought my first automatic - an Orient Ray II - as a placeholder and it’s been pretty impressive cheap watch over the years. Since then I’ve celebrated a few milestones and added an Omega Speedmaster Professional (Masters graduation) and Tudor BB GMT (new job) to my collection, but I always kept coming back to the sub.

Finally, a couple of years ago, I was ready. Naively, I walked into an AD and asked to buy my watch. No dice. I was added to a ‘wait list’, but I didn’t really understand the market, didn’t follow up regularly, and ultimately my SA ended up leaving the AD. Covid struck and I forgot about it for a while.

Fast forward to the middle of this year when I started actively trying again. I had many poor experiences in many ADs, and this seemed to echo stories shared by other first time buyers.

However, eventually I came across a great SA who was by far the most welcoming and transparent of all those I’d met. The rest is history…

Today I called into the AD to collect my new Submariner Date!

Obviously I’m deep in the honeymoon phase, but I love the dimensions of the new 41mm, and I’m shocked at how light and comfortable it wears.

Hoping to add some more pieces to the collection down the track, dreaming of day-date or Lange 1!
