Finish on Submariner

This is submariner #2 for me and the finish is not like the previous submariner.

This one seems to have much more of a brushed look the the tune that it looks streaky. It reminds of a Pelagos that needs to be wiped.

Not sure what’s going on? Any suggestions?

Someone else talked about this recently. Have you washed it with soap and water yet? That seemed to be a general consensus with the other thread. Not sure about yours, but in the other thread oils or something else likely got on there and created the streaky appearance.

Do you have an electron microscope so we can really get a sense of the topography of the brushwork?
These pictures aren't zoomed in enough for me to tell :)

Sorry y’all posted from my phone. It kept telling me the file size was too large so I had to reduce them to this.

Yes already tried the dawn and water. It’s like a weird film. It’s not slick when I run my fingers on it. It’s not sticky per se but like it has some friction.

Had this been polished by somebody? I ask because none of the edges look that sharp. Maybe it’s the magnification though.

Not sure I was wondering if it received a bad polish somewhere. I bought it grey but couldn’t see this on the pictures provided. The finishing on it reminds me
Of a Squale.

I’m about done buying grey at this point.

I really think the images need to much closer to really tell.

I guess you didn't buy it new from an AD.

That doesn't look like a factory finish.

A Grey Dealer (which are new), or a used sale? They are not the same.

Looks like a used watch that has been re-brushed up to me.

And the lugs chopped off. The search continues.

If anyone knows of any reputable second hand dealers in NC please PM me. Would like to buy another one in person.

Huh? You were wondering what had happened to it and why the finish was different but it's used 3 years and refinished?

There's your answer I guess .

Previously had a 2011 that was refinished and looked 1000x better than this. Just wondering if this was an acceptable finish or if the watch maker was drunk that day.

OK that makes sense :)

Yeah looks like quite heavy-handed refinish.

Almost if not all second hand watches on the market have been touched up.
Understandably so because if it shows normal wear marks nobody would buy it.
Only on TRF some people like scratches, in the real world not.

Perhaps go for an unworn example from a real trusted seller.
Bit more expensive but no worries.

Fwiw it’s easy enough to correct a brushed finish and your example is not polished to crap imho.

100000000% sure the second picture shows a watch that has been polished.

There is zero doubt.

And they did a poor job on the south right lug... The polished side went to the brushed.

No more grey? I don't blame you

Grizz,

As Larry has said, that is not the original finish.

Your first post did not describe your Submariner status and some may have thought it was like this from an AD?

Give Rolliworks a call send them some pics and see what they say. They can probably make it look like it should.

It does look a bit scotch brite’d to me but in all honesty these days it’s really hard to tell unless it’s fresh from an AD. I’ve noticed quality has diminished quite a bit from the gray channel but if it’s preowned and premium with crazy pricing would you rather have a scratched up to s$&$” bracelet instead? I wouldn’t.

It looks bad. Your sharp defined edges have been softened with polishing.

Yes I know everyone is laughing at how close the pictures are. I started with them at a normal distance but since I uploaded from my phone the website required me to bring them down to that size.

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. It seems that in this current buying frenzy the grey/second market quality is taking a hit. This is my second submariner I have purchased this way that I have had blatant issues with.

It amazes me how many of these dealers describe them as "mint" or "excellent". Anyway this one is going back as well. After wearing two submariners now it is very hard to go out and buy anything else.

I guess I will be waiting until I can find one local. The unfortunate part is I sold my Pelagos, Marathon GSAR and Seamaster once I bought the sub. Now I'm stuck wearing my beater Seiko SKX.

Live and learn I guess.

There are a lot of decent sellers who will disclose anything and if something slips through they will make it right. Very well known here on the forum.

You can’t get rock bottom prices, but peace of mind is worth the extra.

I know i'll probably get crucified and likely banned for this, but as soon as I got my new SubC date I polished it with silver call the police.. errr... I mean silver polish.. to make it shiny. Still have the brushed look, but shiny brushed just how I like it.

Did I ruin the resale value? Maybe, but I don't care because I bought the watch for myself and like shiny bands. There I said it!
