Cautious of my RG Daytona value

I was wearing my full RG daytona yesterday and a guy noticed it and said I am surprised you are wearing that, you are just asking for trouble. It made me stop and think. I am a vigilant person but with all the horror stories and more people knowing the value of the watch it makes me a bit uncomfortable. Whilst it's nice to know I won't lose my shirt if I ever decided to sell, I almost wish the grey market would cool down. It's getting to the point I would rather wear steel but even with those there aren't many models people don't know. Wondered if anyone had similar experiences.

I think when we wear more value timepieces, we just need to be more vigilant.

RG Daytona is gorgeous timepiece, I just acquired this one today at my Rolex boutique.

I just commented on another thread that I feel the same way. I no longer walk around town with a 60k watch on. No way. So yes you are right to feel this way.

In the past people had no idea the value of your watch. Maybe they would think it was a few thousand. Now they know and you are a target, so I only wear gold pieces to friends, or while entertaining at home, or going to a hotel wedding and such. Don't be stupid guys, yes you are asking to be robbed with a 50k, 100k or more watch on your wrist.

A 10k steel sports is till expensive, and there I would say be careful, but it doesn't flash come get me. You can live a little with steel

Sounds like someone was trying to come off as a tough guy, I'd ignore and carry on.

It sucks that women wear jewelry and engagement rings worth more than most Rolex’s but get less targeted

it sucks that ... women who wear expensive jewelry are less targeted? ????

I think that came out wrong...
or did you actually mean it that way?

idk about other places but in nyc a lot of them flip their ring upside down on their commutes

but op i see you're in the uk and i've seen a lot of horrible videos and stories about watch robberies in london and other places so if you're from there it seems more on the dangerous side, but otherwise not sure how relatable wearing them in nyc is to over there. wear long sleeves would be the best advice. the sad truth is it doesn't matter if it's gold or steel anymore. those who are targeting will recognize a rolex instantly whether it's a sub or OP or gold day date

Insurance doesn’t help stop a bullet or knife. Lots of crazies out there. I wear my Daytona to very select places and occasions. In just today took off my Gilt 5513 and put on rubber strap Breitling Endurance to go to a tire shop in sketchy area. Glad I did, went into office and noticed I was being checked out by several unsavory characters. Walked out got in car and went to Costco. Thank goodness for run flats!!

The ever increasing prices on the secondary market is a double edged sword. It’s nice to know you can come out ahead if you ever get rid of a reference, but it also attracts unwanted attention. Watches have become mainstream now and it’s no longer under the radar. Best you can do is make sure you’re properly insured (market) and practice situational awareness.

This is one of the reasons I like a stainless ND Sub. No one ever notices it...every third watch looks really similar to it.

This!
I agree... why own it when you can't wear and enjoy it in the first place?! Just try make sound judgement where you will wear your beautiful time piece.

How does this guy know you are not a well connected thug?? Maybe he should be concerned about making a flippant comment to a very dangerous individual.

Honestly I think you are more self conscious about this than you need to be. Wear your watch and very few people will notice it. If you go into a bad neighborhood at night and walk the streets and you have any Rolex exposed you are probably fishing for trouble ....wear a Swatch in that situation or nothing at all. Other than that I wear my good stuff without any concern.

Of course I don’t want women to be targeted. I wish people could wear Rolex’s like women wear jewelry. I guess that’s the gift and the curse of a recognized item.

Agree. Gone are the days of casually wearing my gold pieces while running errands or out in general. Values have doubled (and tripled), more people know watches and values. And insurance won't fix the damage from a knife or bullet.

Don't let the fear of theft stop you enjoying your beautiful Daytona.

You've obviously worked hard to be able to afford it so should be able to reap the reward and enjoy the spoils.

Just be sensible about where you wear it - it's not right that we should have to do that but it's just common sense really.

I would never wear any watch in central London, even a SS piece especially at night, but have no worries or concerns wearing a gold piece to a local restaurant with my wife in the locality of where I live in the North.

That is a weird story. My mostly daily wearer is a WG Daytona, steel dial, and I have never had a comment on it, at home or abroad. I've been in situations with other Rolex wearers who don't recognize it for what it is (which, btw, is ok by me).

The other day a guy noticed I was wearing a stainless steel Daytona white dial. He said hey that's a nice watch, you know people would kill to have that thing. I responded, they better be good at killing.

I didn't even ask for ahead of time, just stopped by to say hi to my SA. She showed me two watches, one is TT YG Sky D. and RG Daytona.

I fell in love with RG Daytona, so I took it right away, lucky me, right place at the right time.

Crazy market = crazy robbers .

Dont be naive ,they know the references and values better than you do ...

To think changing from RG or YG to WG makes a difference is really naive !

Its all about easy access to information .The internet has its drawbacks .
Everybody knows the value, thats why everybody also wants one and why its lucrative for robbers .

I think here we all appreciate the timepieces but outside of this bubble, it’s definitely dangerous given certain environments.
