So how long do you want to wait for a Daytona?

I was in town today, so I dropped into my AD as it’d been a while. I’m not currently on a list, or waiting for anything, so it was literally just a social visit with the guy I’ve known and been dealing with for around 15 years.

I asked him how the “Rolex situation” is, and he (fairly obviously) said it was absolutely insane. Interestingly though he said they’re actually seeing a few more pieces coming in recently, BUT that’s obviously more than offset by what he said was conservatively a ten-fold increase in people enquiring about Rolex watches over the last couple of years.

The thing that made me laugh though was when I asked about current wait list lengths and he said the SS Daytona (again, fairly obviously) was the worst by some margin. He said that with the number of pieces they get per year, and the number of people on the list, he said that people at the bottom of their list would literally have a 20 year wait.

So if you’re a walk-in off the street and fancy putting your name down for a Daytona, you may as well do it, and in the meantime there’s plenty you can do to pass the time. Hell you could even have a child, raise them, put them through school, college and get them most of the way through Uni before you need to pay for your Daytona!

I was the first customer at the grand opening of a new Rolex Boutique and so was first on waitlist for SS Daytona. I’ve bought three watches there so far, but still no call for the 116500. It’s been three years.

I had a very short wait back in 2018 for my black dial from AD. I know them well and still got very lucky. Seems much harder today

I’m currently waiting on a 116519 from the same AD and my wait has already been considerably longer than I waited for the 116500

Which store?
I guess you need to spend a little more. (It's all about the "relationship")

There really isn't any "first on the list", you may have been the first one to give your name but they won't make the allocation decision based on that. If someone walked in right after you and established a larger purchase history than you they would take priority.

The obvious truth is dealers never got many SS Daytonas for the last 25+ years under the best of market circumstances. The SS Daytona was always the tip of the spear of limited produced Rolex models.
So when you could buy any model at a discount sitting in the cases (BLNR, LVC, etc) the SS Daytona was never in the case. That is all any newbie to the watch game needs to know about getting a SS Daytona at msrp at a AD. You can play the lottery but I know more people that has won the lottery than got a SS Daytona (white or black) from a AD. It’s not slowing down and when the the SS Daytona hits $50k+ it will even be harder to get than now.

Not surprised by that at all. Probably the same at my AD as well.

So how long do I wait?? Never have for a Rolex

In my case, for Rolex watches I go gray. Rolex boutiques where I am have no "waitlists", or that is what they tell me. They say it's just a matter of luck of walking in at just the right time to find a desired watch in the case. It's hard to believe.... But I am gullible, so accept the standard line all the SAs say. Actually, that is how I got my 16610LV so many years ago. I walked in a boutique and found it in the case.

I am not a patient person, and I am getting up in age, so I want to enjoy my watches while I am still living, without constantly going to all of the boutiques to check the cases.

So, I find the best deal I can get at a gray. So far with Rolex watches, I have done well buying gray now and enjoying them, while seeing the prices go up. Years ago, it used to be only the SS Daytona that was impossible to get at an AD. Now it seems to be every Rolex watch and its really crazy.

I am on a waitlist at another watch brand that does accept waitlists. But I probably won't get the watch until 2023. I can wait for that one.

This.
Most ADs won’t let a random join their Daytona lists anymore.

I wouldn’t personally - I would just buy it on the secondary market if I wanted it.

He told you that more parts are arriving lately and that is true because I already found out the same thing, even in some places there was no great wait for a 126300 and they even had immediate delivery for a 126301. Of course, for other models the wait is longer . Personally I think that for the amount of thousands of watches that I see in the possession of the gray dealers the bubble will soon explode. It is my opinion. No one has the truth or the crystal ball that magicians use.

So,if you decided that Daytona is the love of your life and you cannot live without her ....

Go grey and be done .

10 years from now the premium will be very much in YOUR favour .

Your case is interesting to me. Obviously your Boutique has sold some SS Daytonas in the last three years. Your history with them seems like enough but I guess there’s some other factor that store goes by.
I believe my Boutique does not share inventory with the five other stores in their family owned group, maybe your’s does or at least has to pass scrutiny from corporate.

My best friend was waiting in Miami 3 years buying periodically from the store and went to Spain, bought a diamond ring and got the Daytona on the same transaction.... I personally believe that there is not waiting list as such for the Daytona and most of the dealers use those Daytona;s to award some exceptional customer, someone with large purchase potential or a friend... so the waiting list on that specific model means nothing

When I finally decided to go via a trusted reseller for the white dial, 3 days because my wire was delayed.
Black dial via AD, next day.

Personally would not wait anytime for one ,great movement but got to be the most over hyped Rolex watch ever ,but today many buy the hype to wear it.

There isn’t a traditional wait list so those at the bottom of the list without any relationship or history will never get it. A referral by a really good client would immediately jump them. My son and kids will have an easier time since relationships have already been established.

The “wait list” doesn’t exist. It’s all about how much you spend, the relationship you have with your AD.

Longer now…. I waited two weeks I believe, but that was a few months ago. Check the grey pricing, there is a relationship between grey pricing and ease of attainment from an AD. TT black face trades at $26k now, on a retail of $17k. So it is getting more and more hard to acquire.

Guys…. There are no lists. Sure, sales associates keep files of what we want, and when it comes in they make a case to the Manager, Owner etc for allocation. These decisions are based off spend history.. not who put their name down. Of course people get lucky and the guy before you rejected it and you came up next in line with minimal/no spend history, but there are no lists.

Once I broke a certain number in spend, I got offered every Daytona I have asked for and some I didn’t. That’s the reality. Before I crossed that threshold/number, I was not offered anything. It’s like you break into a different level of spend and then the flood gates open for watches. I chronicled my Daytona journey in a separate thread so I won’t pontificate here. Keep in mind the guys who really get all the watches, don’t post in this forum. I saw a guy drop $400k on a Diamond in Charlotte at lunch time. That guy gets watches.
