Changing taste. Does it happen to anyone else?

Until recently I have been only interested in Rolex sports model. But now, my taste tends to draw towards dress watches. Nothing fancy or complicated. Such as PP calatrava, Lange 1 or VC patrimony. What draws me is the simplicity and the understatement. Do you think that this is a normal evolution or is there something wrong with me? Please help

It would be helpful if you provided both your age and if your personal life has switched to more formal events at which dress watches are more apt

I think it’s natural. Most Rolexes have a similar case, thickness, caseback, and bracelet. Once you own a few Rolex, it only makes sense to add some variety.

It happens. Have gone from not wanting a Rolex, to really wanting one, to wanting all the hot models, to only wanting to have one in my collection to make room for more unique/interesting brands/pieces, and now content with that. Completely normal.

When you play a video game, do you want to play the next level once you solved one?

Same thing, eventually you move up in the watch hierarchy. It’s normal.

Taste certainly change over time.

When I first started buying watches back around 2004/2005 I only purchased larger pieces. 43mm and 44mm. I wouldn’t have gone near a 40mm. Got a 116710 a few years later and liked it despite it being a “small” watch.

Now, I feel like 39mm / 40mm is my sweet spot. I’d be curious to see how a sub 41 would feel, but it’s about a 40mm from what I’ve read.

I also didn’t like Rolex for my early watch years. Now I’m only interested in Rolex based on ease of service and ruggedness of their models. Much easier to live with over time than haute horology pieces imho

May also be changing Zeitgeist (one hopes) or oversatiation from spending too much time on fora / instagram where you see a Pepsi every ten seconds until you really hate that clown piece of junk

Taste change, the brain craves novelty. This is why fashion trends come and go.

I also believe that the “rate of change” slows down as you age too. Ie you don’t just keep switching your taste back and forth between extremes, rather, you refine your taste over time. It becomes more and more stable.

This. Especially when you’re comparing a sub, GMT, sea dweller…even datejust, OP, explorer 1…they all “feel” very similar. Now don’t get me wrong, of course I appreciate the nuances and differences among them.

So yeah, natural tendency to explore different case shapes, materials, dials…

I have heard the new strain of covid changing peoples taste, or maybe it was losing taste. Anyway you should get tested.

My taste in watches has changed over time, but more so in the other direction. I’ve always loved Rolex watches and still do. Nothing has changed there.

Not too long ago, I thought I wanted a JLC Reverso or a Cartier Tank. Now I just have no desire to get either. I’d rather get another diver than either of those.

Also, I remember not liking AP Royal Oak Offshores at all. Now I like them a lot.
