Daytona for 287k and Richard Mille for 280k

There’s currently a Daytona on C24 for this amount, its a zenith black dial, leather strap with factory set hour-marker diamonds. Then there’s numerous Richard Mille around that price point.

Is it just me, or do other TRF’s fail to see any logical sense in these pieces? Am I missing something that someone on here could enlighten me upon? As for RM, I simply don’t get it, and I mean not one iota, does anyone else? RMs for average 250-600k, am I seriously just out of touch concerning this newish brand from the year 2000?

Any members out there that understand this and can explain in simple terms how this conceivably makes sense?

That Daytona is wildly overpriced relative to market, the RM I think is stupid as well but not as overpriced relative to market.

This is luxury goods don’t try and make sense of it anymore than some wanker paying 10 million for a painting that’s two scribbles with spray paint or an NFT that looks like a character from the Atari.

What drives me nuts because I’m too poor is all the people buying RM005 or some ugly sport Patek or AP when they could be getting a 5370P (my grail) for 200k.

RM is like an expensive Hublot virtually no one buys.

For free for a sticker on your car or logo on a shirt and you get unlimited free RMs no matter how many times it gets 'stolen' and makes newspaper headlines. The newspaper headlines and forum posts are a prerequisite LOL j/j

Just because they are asking a certain price, doesn’t mean that they are/will-be closing sales at that price.

I don't get RM either. It looks much like a toy watch to me, not to mention its short history. But they have good marketing and the best way to promote something is to have those celebrities show off on social media. With that amount of money PP would be my only choice.

Logical sense? Did you not see the word UNIQUE in the listing?? Besides, $287k only seems expensive to those who don't know it'll be $387k next year.

I didn't either.... until I owned them.

They are probably not really meant for the Rolex constituency. And I think you nailed it - you either get them or you don't.

The best way to think of them is more similar to a work of art - a painting, a sculpture, a piece of music. You either get it or you don't. You can't argue it or attempt to rationalize it.

Certainly, the prices of either of these two watches would NEVER make sense to anyone that doesn't "get" them. I think the best way I've heard them described is by a guy who said "the fact that they also tell time is just a bonus."

I can buy a Casio or a citizen that is more accurate than any Rolex or Richard Mille. But I don't want to wear a Casio or a Citizen.

Brian makes a good point, even after decades as an enthusiast I don't 'get' RM. For less you can get, for example, MB&F where innovation and craftsmanship are top level.

Expect prices on these to continue rising as there is lots of money looking to get spent.

Seems ridiculous, but the price is what someone is willing to pay for it. And at this point, watches have become like art in that for a lot of people it behooves them to perpetuate the illusion and marketing machine that makes them valuable.

And all of this applies to all higher end watches.

The anti-Mille comments and comparisons to Invicta and G-Shock entertaining; particularly from Rolex wearers. When my relatives found out that I was wearing a $6000 DSSD (years ago), they thought I needed to have my head examined.

Add a zero or two or subtract a zero or two, a $350k RM makes about as much logical sense as a $10k GMT Master II. Neither make as much logical sense as a G-Shock. Just a matter of what you have to spend and how you want to spend it.

In terms of appearance, its the same. Some people like them some people hate them. You hate purple, I like purple; you think your wife is beautiful, I think she's ugly. lol


You're buying the art of a RM, not common sense. Buy one and wear it. Then tell me what you think. If you can't --- buy a G-Shock. Its a better fit for you.

I'm curious. Since you hate both of those, what is your perfect watch?


I have found that the more complications and the more the dial is crammed with subdials, and GMT hands, and flight computer slide rules, the more I like it - whether I actually use (or can even see) any of them or not! But I also know I'm in the minority on this.

Curious to know where you are on this spectrum.
