Royal oak questions
Hello,
I have an older Royal Oak which I have inherited. It has never really worked. It keeps time for a while but then stops. I have sent it in for evaluation and Audemars indicates that the entire movement must be changed out for a total of $6500.00 US. It sounds a bit excessive. Does anyone know what model this is and what caliber movement is used? I am looking for a repair alternative that would cost less than the Audemars quote. Any information will be helpful. |

The only way to make it right is go with AP service center. AP should be able to tell you what is the reference number of this model. Is it 36mm or 39mm? If it is 36mm, it could be 14790ST. This watch looks very good and it is worth to service to make it works properly.

Cant tell the size on it but looking at the case/bezel its been polished quite a few times. Its a shame because it looks like a nice watch.

If it has a seconds hand (and I cannot tell from the picture), the font plus the size of the AP logo at 12 o'clock being a bit small relative to the length of the index markers make me think it could be a 4100BA, 14332BA, 14486BA (two transitional models between 4100 and 14790) or early 14790BA. Again, it's hard to tell from the picture but the positioning of the screws more asymmetrically toward the outside of the bezel make me think it might be the 14486BA because other models would have the screws a bit more centered. If it doesn't have a seconds hand then it could be the 39mm 5402BA... which would be quite a find. I feel that's less likely since the AP logo at 12 o'clock size and positioning of bezel screws looks atypical for that model, but there's so many potential variations with older watches you never know. OP, wouldn't the AP service proposal tell you some basic info about the watch like the reference number? |

Was it found in an old tin in your grandpa's garage or in his couch cushion?

You’ve sent it to “Audemars” which I presume is the authorized service center. Wouldn’t the evaluation report and/or proposal at least indicate the reference? Or if you haven’t received the report yet, I believe they will tell you if you call them. No?

The watch came from a relative that no longer used it. Appears to be 18kt so may have more value for the gold than repairing it for $6500.00. What do you think? Not sure where to measure the case? Any pointers here?

It looks like it is a model 14486BA. Is that good or bad?

BA at the end of the model number indicated as Yellow gold but yours might be 14486ST as steel.

Nice looks like you confirmed the ref number. It's worth paying AP to do their expert work. These mid-size Royal Oaks are harder and harder to find and they continue to appreciate as most AP is. You will also get the service papers, travel box to make it a nice collectible set. Since it was gifted to you imagine that you are paying 1/3 of market price for it!

Why would that be bad? It’s an authentic Royal Oak (apparently), nothing bad about this. It’s also worth a pretty penny, so I would have the necessary work done.

He melted the stainless steel watch down and made cuff links and a bracelet.
