5524R / 5524G : Why no love from the Patek world ?
Saw it yesterday in RG and sunburst brown dial .I think it a beautiful reference .Prefer it to the WG version I saw on another occasion .
Why ?? ![]() |

Absolutely love the 5524 both versions. Getting much more love recently, as per my AD. Go for it.

All about supply and demand. A few years ago, demand was greater than supply and the 5524G was considered a "hot" watch with secondary market prices a fair amount higher than list price. But the tide shifts when supply increases and people can get it more easily. Then watches sit around and prices go down.

Personally I can't wear any Patek 42mm and above due to my small wrist. Even 41mm is marginally too big for me.

The comments I have often read about these watches:
- the pushers placement (causing issues) - the design (not a true "PP" dna, looks too similar to the IWC, etc) - very large watch for smaller wrists. I also agree with what most will tell you here: buy what you love (not what Instagram or any forum tells you what is hot). Forums are great for knowledge borrowing and like Montaigne would say about travelling "pour frotter et limer notre cervelle contre celle d'autrui" (To rub and polish our brain against that of others). |

I tried on the 5524R. I actually went with the intention of buying it. But, for the reasons already listed, It didn’t sing to me as much as I anticipated. I think had the pushers been aligned, I would have bought it sight unseen. I try, If possible, to always to try the watch on in person. It made my decision for me here.

Sunburst brown dial is superb and compliments the RG very well . Strap a bit bland ,a nice honey brown alligator would have been nice (Sorry California) Especially considering the price. I see advertised for less on chrono24 ,compared to the retail price locally .Which for Patek in current market is a bit strange . The security guards watching me closer than Hanniball Lector was a bit annoying .Sales assistant superb |

It’s big and clunky and doesn’t wear comfortably on smaller wrists, like mine at 6.75 inches. I speak from personal experience. So that’s is 100% for sure why this model isn’t as popular as many others.

There was one SS edition for the 7234 and my wife has it. If I recall correctly, it was among the last few pieces to be fully allocated (there were a few limited editions in 2019). This model isn't the most popular then...

The Pilot Travel Time is nice, but at 42mm it’s too big! I tried on the 7234G and really like it, but it’s a women’s watch. They should have made it at 39mm and introduced it as a unisex watch. I’m sure the crowd will go wild. The Dual Time function from Patek is by far its best complication.

To make matters worst this watch was offered to me next to a 5270J and a 5740G... 5524R really stood out in a bad way |

The timing on this thread is perfect, I just picked up my 5524G after special ordering it and waiting several months.
First, I'm a big guy, so the size is a benefit to me, and one of the only PP's I feel comfortable wearing. It's supposed to be big, it's a pilot's watch. Second, it's everything I hoped it would be and more. It wears sporty (I work in a tech environment, so need to dress it down) and I quickly replaced the strap with gray suede for a more casual look. The pushers work great, and it's such a cool take on the GMT complication - similar functionality but such a different vibes than any of my GMT Master II's. So it IS a different look and vibe for Patek, but it screams Patek quality while having a more relaxed vibe. It's a keeper. |

I'm not sure whether I would have gone for it as my first or only PP, but it is an amazing piece on its own.
I personally went back and forth on the 5524G for some time, and it was really the tan strap that threw me off. Once I found some pictures on this forum that paired it with different strap options I went for it, and it remains one of my favorites. I think there are a lot of things that die-hards don't like when they come out and that buck the norm. Sometimes, years later, a different story emerges. Only time will tell, and until then many of us will go about loving this watch. |

I have a 5524R. Honestly, the fact that it ISN'T like all the other pateks, makes it even more appealing, rather than a down side.

I tried a 5524R at an AD 6 or so months ago, and quite liked it. However, I did find it rather large in proportions - both height and diameter wise. Not extreme by any measure, but larger than I'd prefer a RG watch to be (prefer them to be a bit on the smaller side). I ultimately passed, but continue to think the R is incredible with the rose gold case and brown dial. Definitely a modern Patek.

i feel the 5524 series wears much smaller and better than the 42mm aquanauts and the latter are super popular.

My 6” wrist is too small for 5524 but I really love my 7234g.
