Lange 1

Hey guys I’m in the market for a Lange 1

Seems like prices are all over the map and I’m curious if anyone has a sense for what the newer models of the rose gold Lange 1 or Grand Lange 1 should cost me (and any recommended pre owned dealers). I’m open to Moonphase as well if there are better deals to be had on those.

Also does the Lange 1 38.5m wear larger than it sounds? Need to try both on, but curious if anyone has a pic of both side by side or has experience with both and thinks the large size is/isn’t worth the premium.

Appreciate any advice.

I highly recommend going to the AD. I had a good experience with the AD (albeit pre-COVID) in NYC except when I tried to actually buy the Odysseus (which is not relevant here). But to try on the watch I'd recommend going to the AD.

Thanks. Will definitely visit the AD to try both but I assume pre owned is the best way to go. I imagine discounts at the boutique are either non existent or not what they once were.

Can't speak about the Lange 1, but when I was shopping for an Outsize Date a month ago none of the ADs were willing to move on pricing. Most of them were also out of stock too.

If you're looking for discounts/deals, I think your best bet is pre-owned.

1. It wears larger than 38.5 due to the lugs
2. Unlikely to get a discount at AD these days (and def not at a boutique)

It’s a fantastic watch, hope you get one!

What is your wrist size? I think for anyone with normal sized wrists the Lange 1 is the better fit.

The first gen L1 can be bought preowned for 25k still. Gen 2 will be 30 or so I think.

The benefits of buying from the Lange Boutique on Madison Ave. will outweigh the discount you might get from buying in the secondary market. Your name will be on the paperwork, you know the watch is right, if there's a problem it can be dealt with. You can establish a relationship which might have benefits in the future.

The standard Lange 1 has been virtually similar for over 25 years. You can get an older gen RG Lange 1(older movement) preowned for less than half the price of MSRP today(European Watch Co), which is what I did. If you don't plan on chasing more exclusive releases, which I wouldn't be able to afford anyway, then I don't see the point.

Here’s a size comparison of 38.5mm Lange 1 to a 40mm sub. I find they wear comparably because of the larger dial space.

Is this recently and from a boutique?

Was quoted $35k for a new Lange 1 (Reference: 191.032) by a grey dealer. Was told at the boutique there are no discounts, Wempe offered a few %. Is $35k a decent price for this new or am I better off with a pre owned older reference - which I assume I can get in the high 20s. Are the differences between the new ref and older models meaningful enough to justify spending more?

The main difference between gen 1 and 2 is the instant date change at midnight.

That and some other differences are discussed in depth here: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/co...2015-new-model

So I received a brand new Lange in the plastic but noticed a ding on the side of the bezel. Is it worth keeping it and getting a $3-4k discount or would you return for one with no issues? Anyone service a Lange recently? What’s the turnaround time and how much do they charge to laser weld the case? Thanks!

I’d return it -

They’d have to offer a $3-4k discount and good turn around time on the repair for me to consider keeping.

Was the watch from grey dealer, AD or boutique? ALS NYC has an in house watchmaker so you can get a quote. Below link is from ALS website to give ballpark. Personally I would send it back. That’s not a “new” watch.

Lange 1

The 38.5 mm is too small for me and I have to disagree that it wears large. The grand Lange wears a little too large. Sadly I don't own either because my 7.25" wrist is too much between the two.

Grey dealer. Would be an additional $3-4k on top of a 12% discount.

I would take to the boutique in NYC and get an estimate.

Nice pics, thx for sharing. I've been debating between the smaller size and Grande Lange, and I fall right between sizes as well. I might go larger for a little added space / legibility but unsure which way to lean.

Random question but did you try those on at Belluso in Vegas? I remember also trying on a couple ALS pieces there with an ace wrap.

Go try them on - I wear a full bracelet with Rolex and most watches and the 38.5mm wears very nicely. I think it all depends on your exact wrist and where you wear it on your wrist.

Agreed. I can see this one playing out both ways but being my DSSD is my daily, I think I'll likely gravitate toward the larger reference with all things being equal. Hunt is on!
