Relume or original tritium ?
Hi all,
Need your opinions pls on these hands. Seller says they're not relumed. I have my doubts. Thoughts? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'll let the experts chime in but I'd expect original tritium hands to react similarly to the dial under UV light, no? In this case it looks like the dial is reacting slightly but the hands not at all?

The hands appear to be relumed and without any magnification, they might fool someone into thinking they are original. And, as you know, tritium was never meant to last forever. The older it is, the more fragile it becomes.
Personally I have no problem with repaired hands as long as the hands are original Rolex, and the seller describes the hands properly to the buyer - he knows they have been repaired/relumed. Who was the seller? Is he someone that we would expect to know the difference between original tritium and repaired/relumed hands?

Hands look relumed: the material looks kind of too dense and thick to be original tritium.
I think better pictures may help though. |

I'd like to see a full, natural light (not UV) photo showing the dial and hands.
Still, as others have said, the hands appear to be relumed, although in the second photo the UV reaction appears similar. Sometimes the angle of how the UV is hitting the watch can make it appear as if the reactions are different. For comparison, see photo below of my (former) 1665 under UV, with all original lume. And yes, it's not the end of the world if the hands have been relumed .... as long as you're told. And if not, what else might not be disclosed? |

I would have to agree that the hands are relumed and the dial lume is original. But the work is a pretty good match overall, but not original tritium.

Thanks for your responses. the seller is Grey and Patina. Not to discredit him, but maybe he knows more about tritium than I do, so I thought of getting opinions here.
The word ' dead tritium' gets used often, but the texture here is not what you see usually. |
