Advice for a new owner :)
Hi forum,
I've been lurking around for some weeks now and really enjoying the knowledge and experience people genuinely share. I have browsed the sales section and this subforum the most and as i'm looking to get my first RO. But is it a bad time given the recent explosion in price and interest? I got to read the post in this subforum about the pricetrajectory of the 14790 which is the ref. I firstly looked at given my budget and the style I'm after - steel, clean face and dark dial. Budget is around 55-60k USD which i have been saving up (obv. I should have bought 1 year or even few months ago, but oh well... that goes for everyone else too). Been looking for a RO for some time and I can feel that I really want to be a happy owner. My own thoughts have been on the mid-sized 14790 (MK I+II as I prefer the long indices more) and the 15450. The 15400 and up are way too big for me. Price too of course. The 15300 is max size for me i think. I haven't have the opportunity to try that live. As it will be my first RO I think I will feel some sort of connection to it so it will probably be a piece that I will keep for some time! I'm not looking to flip it or trade for a Rolex or something like that. Is the AP i really want to own. But what advice do you have for a newbie entering the more elite market? Is it wise at all to enter it now? Should one wait? The price on the 14970 is obv. less - and even lower with MK III dial, but is it safer to enter the market with the more modern looking 15450 with the further upside that it's doesnt have 20-30 years on it? Every input is really appreciated. Thanks Peter |

Given your budget the 15300 would be a much better choice. It's a 39mm Royal Oak! Why even entertain a 36mm when you have the means, if you stretch a little, to get the original size? I would also dismiss the 15450, the proportions can not compete with the 15300. For the future the 15300 wins again, being the only 39mm with central seconds and limited production run.
I will always maintain, the 15300 is the best RO ever made. |

Welcome, I would say 15300 hands down! With your budget you can pick up a full set white or black dial

Step 1: go to AP House London in person
Step 2: have friend or find friend who is big AP client already to intro you Step 3: try to get ROO 43mm Chrono as first watch assuming it fits If that fails, I might be tempted to look at the dual time RO instead. Otherwise your 15300 plan seems like a solid plan. |

The best time to buy AP is now, because it will cost you more tomorrow. I bet you thought prices were high a year ago. Just buy it if you can afford to

I would prefer to buy from the boutique. Show genuine interest and persistence, and with some patience, you could have the watch you want. Unless you want the 15300 then definitely go second-hand.

Thanks for all the replies!
I guess the 15300 is the way to go! On that note, is it at all wise to consider it w/out box and papers - even if the seller is legit? As in if you are in that Price range, a full set is a must? Thanks again |

In that scenario I would purchase on a credit card (pay the seller fees). Then send for service at AP for authentication. And if any issues come up, then return the purchase to seller with the CC covering you in case the seller does not own up to the error.

If your budget is 55-60k you should be able to find a full set

Hi again,
I dont have enough posts to post a link so i will try and describe as good as i can. After reading your advices of going after the 15300 ive been in heavy pursuit :) I have stumbled upon a 15300 and in the papers under retailer it looks a bit fishy. Most of the times the retailer stamp states address, date etc. Theres only a stamp stating "Galoe Angola" and noting more. No date of purchase or anything. Can this be right? The papers and box looks legit though. Thanks |
