Vintage 3 Watch Collection

Hello everybody,

I am looking at a 3 watch collection and my current hopes are for a 36mm president in yellow gold, 5512 submariner, and a 1675 gmt. My budget is 30/35 for the president, and 40-50 for each of the steelys. What are your thoughts on how to make sure I get what I think I'm buying and come away with some nice pieces to pass down to my children one day. I'm no expert so all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Those are large numbers for your budget so I assume you desire perfect watches with boxes/papers/provenance etc.
If so that in itself can be a slippery slope in the vintage Rolex world for a novice, but we all had to start somewhere.
Definitely utilize this forum by posting clear photos of the prospective candidates you are looking at.
There are several highly recommended vintage dealers located here that can assist you with your purchases.
But again, since you are a novice to vintage Rolexes, use the many eyes here on the forum to help you vet your potential purchases by asking lots of questions and posting clear pics prior to pulling the trigger.
I’m sure plenty of others will have excellent advice for you but your journey sounds like a lot of fun if it’s properly embraced.
Here’s one of many good sample threads that can help you as an example.

Good luck!

Personally if you are a fresher to the vintage collecting game, and you only want the more expensive top examples, I'd stick with say in the U.S. Dealers like HQ Milton, Bullang e.g. Specialist dealers in fine examples - worth pointing out that the mint high value items have their fans but the pool of people who will pay say $50k for a full set gilt underline 1675 are of course a lot less than a common 70s 1675 at $18k and if you buy from a dealer it will take 12-15 months to 'wipe your face' of their profit margin too of course . I'm more into pieces that are a bit 'lived in' and I've been in the Vintage game since 1977 so I don't buy from the big dealers, but they are great for newbies I think.

When did the Vintage Rolex Discussion Forum become the Vintage Investment Allocation Forum?

Yup, definitely a trend here and on the general forum. To be fair, though, the OP is talking about handing down the watches to his kids, so it doesn't seem to be only about value.

When you see what happens in the market, you kinda think that. Expect to see more the way the international zeitgeist is rolling.

This. And Jacek at Tropical Watches, of course.

I'd say the OP has way over-budgeted. You can get decent examples of those pieces for much less.
