Rolex - a Scratch Magnet ?
In a period of 2 months of not regular wear, my SS Daytona has picked up some scratches, not deep but visible scratches, I really dont know from where and how. When not is use the watch lies on a velvet pad, when it is worn there are two layers of clothing viz a shirt and jacket protecting it (even now when it is hot). When taken off to pass thru airport security etc it is protected in a pouch. I have never mollycoddled any other watch so much and inspite of this a few scratches have appeared. And the irony is that my Cartier Santos which I have worn for 10years , absolute rough use, even worn to the Gym, has fewer scratches than this 2 month old Daytona. I know all of you will say the Rolex service brings it back to prime, but my service is 5 years away and I for one am very fussy about all my possessions and ensure everything is scratchless. And as far as the YG GMTIIC is concerned, it is worse than the daytona but that is expected with a Gold watch. I would have thought 904steel would be quite hard and not so easily scratchable. Everything gets scratched but not so easily when absolute care is taken. Anyone else have any experience of this. Maybe the dull matt finish bracelets are harder to scratch or do not show scratches so much as the highly polished links of the Daytona ? Not that I wouldnt buy another Rolex, I love the watch, but am curious about this tendency and eager to hear what others have to say, thanks.

IMO, the polished center links (PCL) look worse before they look better. In other words, over time the PCL's will develop a nice patina and the scratches will be less noticeable. Your Santos has a brushed bracelet and case right? If so, the scratches will not be as apparent as on your highly polished Daytona & GMT.

I have found my SS Daytona to attract scratches, I swear one link got scratched WHILE sitting in the box.
Honestly, can't worry about it. Send it in for servicing in a few years and it'll look better than new. |

Never let them bother me on a Rolex. It can take it.

scratches or just swirls?
All watches get those swirls no matter how careful you are. On the matted finish of the Cartier, they are not so apparent, but the polished center links and the polished case of the SS Daytona can really show those off. :)
It's worst on my 18K WG Daytona. |

Won't lie . . . they used to really bother me.
But over time, I found I don't think about them anymore. Of course, this time usually coincides with my decision to get another. |

Don't sweat it my friend. I too was like you once, always examining my watches and worrying about scratches. But you'll get past it - unless you subject your watches to undue abuse (and it sounds like you don't), these watches are meant to be warn, enjoyed and....yes, scratched!

Exactly , I found myself polishing my 116520 every saturday morning with car polish / scratch remouver till my wife got jealous of it . I find the center polish on the clasp the worst area to collect those scratches . On my SDDS it is the polished sides of the clasp that gets the most of it .

If it wasn't meant to be a safe-queen, chances are your Rolex is strapped on your wrist, hence scratches are inevitable.
I have deep encrusted scratches on my SD and I am lovin' them - the enjoyable notion of scratches = character. All metals are prone to scratches, not just watches.....It all depends on the angles of where the impact is coming from. |

My Daytona does not have that problem, but I have a dent in a link, and the numbers from the 60 to the 400 on the bezel are almost gone. I have had it serviced once and it came back looking new except for the bezel. My daily wearer is a Sea Dweller or a Speedmaster Pro on a leather strap, both of these hold up much better. The Sea Dweller is easy to take care of because only the side of the links and watch are not brushed. Part of the problem I have is doing computer work and the way the left side of my watch band then rests on the desk.
