Pelagos LHD Or new GMT II?

My son is left handed and I had been looking at getting the Pelagos LHD to hold for him as a gift for when he graduated HS. Now the new GMT is out. The colors are ok, but the date window being on the 9'oclock position makes the watch look upside down. The date window on the Pelagos is in the more traditional 3 o'clock position.

What's are your thoughts between the two?

Maybe start with the Pelagos and if he likes it he can aspire to go through the trouble of getting the Rolex himself some day

I don’t understand this argument. I keep seeing it over and over.

Yes, on many LHD movements the date and crown are opposite each other, however in this case, Rolex decided to keep the crown in a consistent position with its RH brother. So the date is next to the crown.

Using the logic in many of these posts, shouldn’t the RH (normal GMT) have the date at 9 o’clock?

How about get the Pelagos as a HS graduation gift and the GMT as a college graduation gift...gonna take you a while to source the GMT anyways so you buy yourself four years. Also, he won't be judged by his peers as much with a Tudor on his wrist at 18 vs. a Rolex at 18.

I wore a Pelagos thru college, go with it. It flies under the radar compared to a Submariner/GMT that college kids will try to steal. Keep in mind, all it will take is for some kids to get him drunk...he passes out and they slip a $15-20K watch (grey market value) off his wrist. It makes him a target. The Pelagos, people will only know if they're watch enthusiasts OR if he himself shows the watch off.

Get the GMT for him as a gift when he gets his first big boy job.

I think the Pelagos would be a better choice, to be honest. For this stage in his life. It's a do everything, knock around watch that would fit a younger lifestyle, IMO.

Agreed Brian

The date window is 100% correctly placed on the VTNR. Leaving it at 3 on the other LH watches (including the prior Rolex references) is basically lazy and cost saving as it doesn't necessitate a new dial, just a new date wheel.

Its also less obvious on those watches that don't have a cyclops

Whew ... glad someone agrees.

I thought maybe I had to be left handed to understand

There's no doubt that the Rolex will be the more prestigious gift and might end up being a lifetime keeper. Not sure how you plan to get one!

BUT I have the LHD Pelagos and it is an amazing watch. It is just about perfect. Light, comfortable, interesting matte color dial, 3 dimensional dial features, roulette date wheel, fantastic clasp and micro click bezel. Other than that its terrible..

when the watch peeks out of your sleeve, do you want the date window available or do you want it hidden further up under the cuff?

I would say, logic would have the date readily available.

I have the same quibble with the ALS Lange 1 where the time favors the left side of the dial

I am left handed and wear my watch on the right wrist. Wearing a watch this way and operating the crown with my right hand my whole life the LHD just felt odd when I tried it out.

If you can get passed this then I would say LHD through his college years and GMT later. No way would a Rolex have survived my college experiences.

Both are expensive watches and IMO not a great idea for a relatively young man setting out in life. Perhaps you might consider the CWC destro diver - reasonably priced, flies under the radar and can survive the rough and tumble of a young man’s life. Whatever you decide he will be a lucky chap.
