Do ADs cancel often?

Got a call saying a watch I had asked for was coming in and if was still interested, confirmed, discussed payment options and was told they’d be in touch very soon. Didn’t hear anything for weeks, spoke to them last week essentially to be told “what are you talking about” then a little while later “oh yes we did mean to give you one but Rolex supply issues eh? So unpredictable”

It was clear that she had forgotten and the watch was given to someone else.

It was a real kick to the teeth and I was wondering how often this happens.

I would agree with the above statement. if you aren't high on the spender list you need be memorable somehow. Popping in occasionally helps. Does suck that they got your hopes up. Hopefully they make it up to you

Sounds like the SA got too far out in front of the events. When my AD calls me to say my watch is in, they have received it, they have discussed who it should go to, the store owner has approved the decision and someone has been instructed to ring me.

I guess there must be a lot of variation among dealers, but it sounds like someone wasn't in the loop.

Sucks, I’m sure it happens often. The good news is it sounds like they have one for you. I would let them know i want it when the next one comes, but you have to ride a fine line. You don’t want to come across so eager they think you’re trying to flip it and make money. If it’s something you’re going to keep forever, the extra month or two doesn’t matter in the large scheme of things. That would be my recommendation.

Why did you wait "weeks" to contact them?
A nice follow-up call or in-person visit and the watch could have been yours!!
It would have been worth the attempt!!

Been on both ends of this one and it is very true. At my go to AD I am well taken care of, I tried to establish myself as a client at my local AD by just being polite and stopping by and crickets…the typical horse and pony show that most new members receive. My current AD gets all my watch/jewelry business and in exchange I’ve gotten some great watches. The local AD gets hellos and watch chat and in return I haven’t gotten a call from them for a watch in a year

How far apart are your "current" AD and the "local" AD? Different city?

That sucks, and poor form from the AD. I imagine you would have been dealing with a "junior" SA who probably got ahead of themselves and got bumped by a higher up. Even still, that's very annoying.

Thanks for the well wishes! I’ve gotten over it now, it’s a watch in the end of the day. Just needed a couple of days aha. I thought once you “got the call” that the wait was over. It’s a WoS AD so I thought they were reliable.

Yes, I’m aware I was very low down the totem pole. I had no expectations from the AD but the call took me from 0-100. The model isn’t hot, would say amber. Don’t want to specify in case they’re lurking aha.

Personally I'd pop in and ask to speak to the manager. Not being offered a watch is their perogative but what they've done is different.
I would politely tell the manager just how disappointed and deflated you are with how they have behaved.

That supply issue line is a a load of BS, someone has cocked something up. The AD should never have called you if the watch wasn't physically there and been allocated and signed off to you.

Worth having a chat face to face I reckon.

I would’ve done that straight away for most other things. I guess I’m worried this is a sure fire way of getting blacklisted or something. All the ADs around me are WoS group so I’d be going grey from now on

Sorry you did not receive the watch. I would go into the AD and have a discussion in a polite manner and see what they say beyond supply issues.

You can take your money and custom elsewhere. I would give them an opportunity to rectify the error but if they don't I would be an ex-customer. Amazing what people will put up with.

Sorry to be this brutally honest, but being "afraid" of your AD will get you nowhere. They're just sales people who happen to sell Rolex watches. If they don't want your business, take it elsewhere.

Having a polite word will not get you blacklisted; being an arrogant arse, flipping etc will.
If they never offer you a watch there is nothing that you can do, complain about and nobody to complain to.

But in my view this is different, it's a cock up. Cock ups happen, no big deal but also no reason why you can't politely try and use it as leverage.

Rather than being angry or confrontational I would just talk about how disappointed you are and how you had even told family/friends/spouse that you were getting the watch and are now a little embarrassed when they ask etc. Lay it on thick

Yea, I'd go in humble but direct...explain what happened, state that you understand mistakes happen but are disappointed and that ultimately you're looking for them to 'make it right' and directly ask if you'll receive the next XXXXX allocation that comes in and try and get to a narrower window (1 month wait, 2 month wait, etc.). I'd also get a name and contact for follow up...and then start a paper trail of follow up emails to reference in the future.

If a place is going to blacklist you for coming to them about a mistake that they made and seeking for them to make it right, then its pretty unlikely that they were ever going to allocate you a watch in the first place.

This is just one where you don’t want to overplay your hand. Keep that in mind and this can work to your advantage. Remember: Rolexes sell themselves, other brands don’t, so WoS still has to look out for its overall reputation.

Sorry to hear that totally sucks. All I can say is I would have followed up the following week with, "Hi, I'm just planning my week and wanted to get an idea of when I could come in and pick up the watch."

Had an understandable one with an AD where I waited a year for a piece that became a boutique only model. I didn't hedge my risk and also express at the same time as the boutique, so was a lesson learned for me.
