Oyster perpetual 31 coral red

Hi guys,

I've been collecting a few watches the past years (an airking precision 34, a tudor prince 36 an a jaeger ultra thin moonphase). I've been looking to add a new watch that would be smaller in diameter because I wanted a collectible item that my girlfriend could wear as my other watches are a bit too large for her small wrists. I have to say we're both huge fan of the coral red dial. The only problem is that I can only get it second hand and the minimum I can buy it for is 7.800 usd brand new full set. Although I don't plan to make cash from it, I'm not in a financial situation where I can loose money from it. Do you guys think It will always hold it's value around the 8k and I should pull the trigger on it?

Cheers,
Marc

If it's for perceived value, leave it

Thanks for the reply, although I'm not totally sure I understand what you mean (English is not my native language).
It's not really a question of value, I just love the watch and the price of 7.8k is an honest price (for the grey market). It's just that as much as I love the watch, I'd rather not pay an after market price if it will loose it's value in the future years. I've been willing to get this watch for a long time but it's discontinuation made me have to rush things up unfortunately.

Unfortunately, nobody can predict the future value of a watch. Is a Rolex less likely to lose money than some other brands yes; is this a certainty, no. As you mentioned being 'a bit tight right now' and 'not being able to afford a drop in value in a few years', the advise should be not to buy luxury items in that situation.

You are buying a piece right after discontinuation, so the price is I would say at its peak as the dealers are trying to capitalise on irrational fear of buyers. Get on the list for the new DJ31 with floral dial. It’s a better watch and at retail it’s less likely you will lose money in the long run.

I’m was sorry the forum didn’t answer your question better so I thought I’d send a note with my opinion.

I have a Rolex 31mm OP in Coral Red that I bought for my wife last year and it’s the fourth Rolex watch we’ve owned that has been discontinued (the others were a 2016 Batman, 2017 Floral Datejust, 2019 MOP Daytona)

In each case, the values rose (as you’d expect) just after they were discontinued, but they have also all continued to rise in value since.

If you can buy one at around $8k now I think you won’t regret it. In fact, looking at the prices over the last few days, I think the bigger danger is that you will regret not buying one now at that price.

Cheers!

$7800 BNIB sounds like last week's price. Grey dealers are already selling the 41mm for $30k, and I doubt the 31mm didn't go up with them.

This watch was $7800 on the secondary market before being discontinued, so no, they wouldn't be buying at its peak.

Maybe if OP was buying at $15k-$20k, you'd have a point.

As the poster above stated, you should buy it now if it is in fact available at that price.
