Trading my Air-King?

I have a 116900 from 2016, full set. Recently been offered a 16570T from 2011, also full set in a 1:1 trade. In terms of money spent I might lose around 100-120 bucks.

Should I do it? A 3186 cal. Explorer II with black dial I’d assume is trading up. Now that the 116900 is discontinued, maybe I should wait, maybe I’m letting go of my Air-King too soon?

Doing a quick look at the market, you're leaving a couple grand on the table. Do you like the ExII better? That's the real question.

If I liked it better (which I do), I'd make the trade.

Trading my Air-King?

Thanks Rob. I do like it better, but I thought the Exp II with the newer caliber would be in the same ballpark with the Air-King

Follow your heart and less of the investment. Does it spark joy? I'd rather have the explorer but that is because I think the modern AK's are ugly.

Do you think the price for 116900 still have room to go higher?

Investment at this level is a bit ridiculous.

I have both and wear them equally.

Get or keep the one you like better and there's your decision!

To say the 116900 is discontinued sounds better than it is. Not all discontinuations are created equal. It is discontinued just like the Explorer 1 with short "T-Rex" hands and partial lume was discontinued: It was replaced by a better version that is close in appearance and still preferred today over the discontinued version.

The 116900 were made for five-plus years and it's not considered a short production. Hey, I love the watch (see my avatar). But to give you another example, the 116610LN (square-lug Sub) and the Explorer II 216570 have been discontinued and replaced by improved versions -- but close enough in design that still today, no one is preferring the discontinued model over the current production.

You may have to wait a long time until the 116900 carries that "it's-discontinued!" premium.

Yea I’m expecting a premium at all. Indeed with such a “partial” discontinuation that was essentially no more than an update, I don’t see the demand going up for this model. If anything the new version is more desired.

Still I kept it because I don’t think the value trade would worth it.

Just realized a typo, correction: I’m NOT expecting a premium

I like the 16570 better, I don't have an opinion on the money.

I’d do that trade in a heartbeat. With the updated AK, I see the previous version declining in value in comparison over time. The 16570 has been steadily increasing in value. Besides it’s a way better piece IMO. .

I think the white dial one with the 3186 would be closer in price since they are quite a bit more expensive with that configuration!
