Using used Rolex trade in as bait for new Rolex trade in with AD.
My local AD's have no reason to move me up to sell me a new Sub or GMT. My thought was trading in some older datejusts toward this purchase. Since they can only sell the new Rolex at MSRP they can make some money on the trade-ins as well. Of coarse it would have to make sense versus buying grey market. Has anyone tried this strategy?

Authorized Dealers can charge whatever they want. One watch dealer in Pennsylvania called precision watch charges above MSRP on all the sports models and is not shy about it.

I attempted this trade-in strategy 2 months ago. I told the AD that I would like to trade my ceramic Bluesy for the current Bluesy. I told them I would take a reasonable offer on mine and would pay retail on the new one. They, very politely, told me they weren’t interested.
Hey, I took a shot. |

If your AD also sells used Rolex, they may have an interest, but you will take a haircut on what you may be able to get privately.
That said, there’s the risk/hassle factor of selling them on your own. Myself, I might be more inclined to try and work a deal with one of the trusted sellers here. ![]() |

Yea your old DJ’s probably aren’t good enough “trade bait”, but I’m sure the overall strategy would work at an AD that also sells lots of pre-owned pieces if you had a Daytona or another hot model to trade (and be willing to accept MSRP for it) it would likely push you up the list.

Don’t think it will work with a datejust, but worked with me for my 114060 to 124060.

I've been to Precision Watches in Montgomery mall. Are you sure they charge above MSRP for brand new watches? That's insane!

They'll offer you about 30% less than they are worth on the open market, IF they even want them.
The ADs aren't hurting as bad as people think, they're selling basically every watch that comes in at MSRP before it even hits the display. People seem to forget the old days with watches languishing in display cases for years offered at a discount just to move them. |

As long as you are respectful, my feeling as a general rule is: It never hurts to ask.
This doesn't apply to offering someone 20% less than what they're asking (I had some dufus do that to me once when selling a car) but if you have a business proposal, as long as it's not illegal or immoral, I see no harm in testing the waters.

At one point I contemplated moving on from my TT CHNR for a full PM one with the AD i received it from. They were interested in taking mine in but did not offer a replacement in PM. Wasn't really a strategy since I just wanted a change but I'm sure you can do that to some degree of success.

Most ADs don't care about your trade-in.
Trading in is for your benefit, not theirs. They would need to either wholesale it out or have their own corporate center overhaul it for sale and will not see it again. You will not get market value for your trade - ever.

Did it less than a month ago. Had two GMTs and two Subs.
One of my ADs have pre-owned section. So I gave them worn Sub and GMT and they gave me brand new blue Sky-dweller on jubilee. No regrets. It's a win-win for both parties as I paid retail for the Sub and GMT. |

Not sure about them performing an overhaul but they will definitely need to clean it up and prepare if for resale. That takes time and time is money. |

From personal experience I can tell you that this can and does work, but an old Datejust will not cut it. It will have to be other models that garner more that retail. I asked about trading in the new Omega NTTD towards a new SS Daytona and the response was that this model didn't move the "needle" enough to make it work. In the end it worked with another SS Professional model. Trade plus a pile of cash did it.

My AD sells select 'pre-owned' Rolex pieces - I pretty much offered my excellent condition full set 114060 in a straight trade for a 124060 - my offer barely elicited a response.
Of course I could sell the Sub privately and make a chunk of change, but I'm not into flipping and can't be bothered with the hassle of selling then locating a replacement. Figured the AD could make a tidy profit and the trade would provide me a little goodwill - I'm on the list for a couple of other pieces - and anyway I'd get a watch of similar value to my 'old' Sub. Your results may vary, others seem to have been successful. |

An old DJ? Really? Forget it. The problem with trade-ins lately is people go into an AD with 22yr old Sub and want 11K for it.

Using an old Rolex for trade or "bait" is not going to change anything because you'll still get market value based on the condition, based on how much work is required to service the watch and etc. It's not going to change anything. Just be a decent person and show actual interest to the sales rep and you'll have better luck.

Most ADs nowadays don't carry used watches. So trade-ins rarely happen in general.

So you are saying that they are selling NEW Rolex watches for OVER MSRP? Highly doubtful. Are you sure that happens on NEW Rolexes? (As in brand new, straight from Rolex) Quickest way to have your AD status pulled... |
