Trading Rolex Sports for High End PM

Thinking of riding the high aftermarket on steel GMTs and trading for something with a much higher MSPR but about the same street price. Candidates for now are a Patek 5296, a Lange Saxonia, or a Cartier Tank Cintree.

My biggest hesitation is that if I move out of a Sports Steel watch I'll regret it. I'm not going to pay over retail to replace, so the replacement process will be hard if not impossible.

What I would love to know is if anyone has done the type trade I am describing and if so, how did you feel 2 months after, 12 months later and so on?

Thanks for any feedback!

Do you have other steel sports? I moved some steel stuff for my DD and don’t regret it at all. Strike while the iron is (stupidly) hot.

Do it in a heartbeat and never look back. The fact that a measly $10,000 watch can now propel you into a new atmosphere of haute-horologie is just baffling. This market won't last forever, so take advantage of it while you can!

my take on it is from a value standpoint it's worth it, but dress watches are a totally different lane so you need to be sure of that. would you actually get as much wear from them? there's a lot of value in being able to wear a steel rolex with anything and for anything

In the current collection (below) only a 90s Tag diver would be the only sports watch left. Part of the thinking is my GMT is a travel watch I no long feel comfortable traveling with so it is just perhaps more valuable to someone else than to me.

It looks like you have a bunch of toy/kids watches and a Rolex. I would definitely keep it.

Looks like you have the dress watches covered. Personally, I'd want to keep a SS sports Rolex in the mix

I have certainly given the thought of trading a stainless steel model for a PM model but I have not personally made the jump.

I’d save for the PM and keep the BLNR, you’ll miss it

Out of those choices I would not, given your current collection. I feel the Patek Cartier and ALS are very similar to what you already have. Unless you absolutely love the style and reference, I'd keep the BLNR.

Lol… I didn’t realize Longines, Cartier and a Rolex Cellini were toy/kids watches.

If you had several sports steel Rolex watches, I'd say yes, trade one of of them for a PM HH piece. With just one SS sports, I'd add, not replace, no way.

Very nice collection. IMHO I'd keep the BLNR.

This kinda proves my point, people see Rolex from a mile away and everything else, even PM watches fly under the radar. Under the radar is where I want to be.

This Lange Dual time would be an interesting candidate:

Sell the BLNR op... This forum is, understandably, obsessed with the crown. People in another thread are seriously arguing that Rolex is better than AP, PP etc. It's just insane.

You don't feel comfortable with the attention the BLNR brings - that is fine. Strike while the market is still irrationally high, and trade into an upper echelon watch. A PP 5196, Lange, Breguet, or many other options would be class moves, and no one will be looking twice at your wrist!

More to do with size and appearance. I didn't even really look at brands.

Mickey mouse, a roulette wheel, some squares that look toddler sized....

However, I do think the Cellini is nice. The BLNR is the only proper men's sport watch, IMO, so I'd keep it if I were you.

To each their own...
