Long time lurker here and first time posting in this group.
I have been seeing prices of rolex in Australia are much higher compared to other countries (for example Singapore). Look at Pepsi for instance, dealers are asking for around 42-45k AUD while dealers in Singapore are asking for 35k SGD (SGD and AUD are similar in terms of conversion). And not just rolex, Patek and AP and other “hot” models as well. So I’m just thinking: Why would anyone want to buy it in Australia? Get an air ticket to Singapore, get the watch, claim the 7% gst and save at least 10-20% overall 🧐. I mean it’s not my money but just an observation. I know this is not a great topic to ask in the Aus watch forum (Chances of me getting kicked out is high) so let me know your thoughts. Do people not care about 10-20% saving or there’s something I dont know? ![]() |

You're wrongly assuming that the watch you want is easily available in Singapore. What you suggest used to be feasible. Rolex even used to advertise Hong Kong as the cheapest place to buy a Rolex, due to no sales tax. Nowadays all bets are off.

Don’t forget the 10% GST coming back into Australia
Prices are all over the shop at the moment with many high asking prices. I’m wondering what they actually sell for ? ![]() |

As Peter has said 10% GST.
No customs duty. And if you import a watch to Aus the GST is applied to the landed cost for both new and used goods.

AU is one of the worst places to buy.
The gray dealers and facebook pages are asking $10k+ over asking even still now after all these drops. They just sit there or they are marked as sold and reposted a few weeks later. Lets see how they will do that now if the drops continue to slide. Plus the gray dealers are saying custom duties and convincing yourself to pay duties that they supposedly paid. LMFAO. They didnt pay crap. I've bought MANY watches from AU dealers and good friends with some. I know all the gray dealers tricks they try to tell the customer. Take it this way ALL AU prices are currently at least 10% or more above global prices. Use TRF/WatchRecon,WatchuSeek and other forums to gauge REAL market value. If you pay the asking prices on AU facebook pages your gonna get ripped a new one when you try to sell. |

prices in japan should be one of the cheapest in the world due to the yen depreciation. but the country is still not open to travelers yet.

Can’t agree more. Custom duties are not exclusive to just Aus, Singapore dealers have to pay import taxes if the pieces are from overseas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

That’s true, but the ones I often see price discrepancies are the hot ones that are readily available everywhere. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It's true. Grey price of watches in Singapore are amongst the lowest in the world. Check out Carousell - prices could be 10% to 40% lower than grey dealers and the watches are legit. I know there's at least 1 Aussie grey dealer who partners with a Singapore broker to acquire watches, who then resell in Australia.

Why would anyone pay customs/import duties at their arrival airport ?
Buy the watch wherever, Fedex the box and papers home, put watch on wrist, wear it home. Its "used" one second after you purchase it. Oz GST is stoopid. For flight crew - if you purchase a watch downtown, you pay GST, and cannot get refund at airport on departure... BUT YOU CAN buy watch at airport DUTY FREE shop, and pay no GST.... Takes away income from downtown local merchants, and gives it to airport vendors. Real dumb ! |
