Two ball bearings
The University College of London did a study on aptitudes in different professions within the essential services.
Three volunteers were selected from the Fire Service, the Ambulance Service, and the Metropolitan Police. All three were locked in a police cell for 24 hours, with only two ball bearings to keep them occupied. After the time was up, they oppened the cell containing the fireman. They asked him what he had done with his two ball bearings. "Well," he said, "I have managed to perfect the art of balancing one ball on top of the other." And with this, he puts one ball into the flat of his hand, and straight away balances the other one on top. Fantastic, think the scientists. This shows an unusual level of dexterity and concentration. The paramedic is next. When they open the door and ask him what he has done with his ball bearings, he replies, " I have managed to calculate the friction and drag on these two balls, allowing me to roll them precisely anywhere in this small, sealed cell." Highly impressed, the scientists ask him to show them, by rolling the balls exactly to the wall on the other side of the room. The ambulanceman gets down, and flicks the first ball, which coasts exactly up to the wall, just stopping short. He repeats it with the other ball. Brilliant, the boffins note. This shows an extremely high level of mental ability, translating into the finest of physical touches. Finally, they come to the Met Police Officer. Much is expected of him, as he is also playing on his home ground. "Well," ask the scientists." What have you managed to do with your ball bearings, officer ?" "Sorry," says the bobby, " I have lost one, and broken the other." |

Sorry chaps (and ladies), no disrespect meant to the boys in blue. I am a defence lawyer, and (despite this !) number several cops as my good friends. The joke was actually told to me by a bobby.
