Serial Numbers

I’m afraid to post a picture of any of my watches, because I am worried about the Serial Number showing (based on what people say about doing so).

(I have a hard time getting a flattering photo, that does not show the Serial Number.)

What are these nefarious people doing with the Serial Number ?

Can’t they just make up a number ?

Does it really matter ?

I hate not (being afraid to) posting photos. I love seeing pictures of watches.

It is possible to get a good photo without the serial number showing (e.g. due to light reflection).

I suppose nefarious people could use it to make a fake and would know what model that serial relates to.

You’re thinking too much here! If they wanted serials, they could go into stores and get them

If you're that bothered you can always download a free photo-editing app on your phone and just use it to block out any of the serial number that may show on your pictures.

This not posting serial numbers just exists in fantasy land. You can have all my numbers.
Nothing is going to happen to the watch when you do

Have to agree its funny when some buy Rolex watches it make the anxiety complex kick in god know why. Its just a watch yes a expensive one, but just a watch, that millions wear each day world wide.

It’s complicated - opinions vary - not going to change anyone’s mind.

Please post the best photo’s of your watch with the full serial number legibly visible. Those with s/n’s twixt the lugs need not participate.

Just want to see the full random ones on the rehaut. For the avoidance of doubt, type the full s/n into the post to help Google search for both website and image data harvesting.

If it’s on your mind you can just mark up the photo to block it out. Like this:

Very easy to do on a iPhone

This same issue comes up when people post pictures of firearms on other forums. I was in law enforcement for 31 years and can say that worrying about someone seeing the serial number on your watch or firearm (or even the license plate on your car - I've seen pictures with those blacked out) is not necessary. As mentioned earlier, anyone can get a legitimate serial number at a store or from other sources and it is not like someone can steal your identity because they know the serial number on your Rolex or .357! (4G130486 and SDA0894.)

The only thing the serial number is used for is to mark the product, in it's production que.

Don't overthink it. Serial numbers online are a non-event.

Yep, me too!

This is one of those things that takes literally 5 seconds to do with a phone app, so I'm of the opinion 'why not blank them out if you want to'?

That said, I have no clue what someone would do with a Rolex s/n, but you can also guarantee that 9 times out of 10, someone somewhere will try to exploit information given to them for their own gain if at all possible.

It's most useful for gray dealers as to not reveal the source of the watch, or for flippers for the same reason.

Lots of good stuff here … thanks.

I just wondered if there was a problem in posting pictures showing serial numbers, and you have answered that.

I look at some of my photos, and the serial number is more clear in the photo, then I can see with my naked eye !!! Lol

The biggest reason for not posting serial numbers is the incessant following posts and pm's telling you that "your serial number is showing"
