What about lume on Day Date?

What are your opinions about lume? Those who have both types (with and without) - any regrets?

I love the new platinum fluted 40mm day date with ice blue romans. But I wish it had lume! All my other watches have lume and I find it useful at night. I concede it possibly is dressier without the lumed hands and hours. I dont like the models that do have lume, only the ice blue roman dial.

What do you think? If I love lume (I wear my watch to bed at night too), am I making a mistake to go with the stunning Reference 228236?? (I Cant stand the lumed grid dial version).

It’s a DD40, you don’t need lume. Are you going spelunking with it? The deconstructed romans is what makes it stand apart. Wear another watch when you need lume.

I currently have a RG DD40 olive and it’s my only watch w/o lume. When I wear it, I have absolutely no desire that it have lume. The dial and indices make it special. I’m actually waiting on a platinum myself with the ice blue romans. Looking forward to having a platinum with a fluted bezel.

interesting! Why would you wish it didn't have it? Because you think it aesthetically detracts or something else?

I personally like the diagonal motif DD40 dials with lume, makes the watch a little more sporty.

It’s a Day-Date, it’s not supposed to be sporty, but I respect your preferences.

I get why folks like it un-lumed, me too. Fluted bezels, great bracelet, wonderful dials, that make it pop, along with high end materials.

Meanwhile, it has a pretty unremarkable movement, with little finishing and a screw down crown. A bit of mixed messaging, maybe? Just a thought.

Like the screw down crown, lume hold make it more of an everyday piece. Then again, many who own one, own others… with lume. So, there’s that. I can see both sides.

I guess I’m in the minority, I miss lume on my DD. I have even thought about changing the dial to get it, but I don’t feel like parting with it for that long. I’ll just stay with the silver dial until service, who knows, I may change my mind by then.

I wouldn't mind lume on a DD can go either way honestly.

Just doesn’t suit it in my opinion, I just find it strange and out of place - and unnecessary. But I came from 5 digit day dates which never had it.

I actually enjoy mine with lume. There are moments I am at a dinner or evening event and it’s nice to be able glance and make out the time. (although the lume is not that strong)

I have a 1990 DD; I replaced the original stick dial and hands with new ones at service. The new sticks have the full lume (vs dots) and the hands have lume. But, it's not very good. You can subtlety see it in pure darkness after being exposed to bright light. I like it, but I wouldn't miss it if I had Romans or other fancy dials. Like another poster said, it's not like I'm taking it out for sporting activities (except golf). I have a sub for that.

FWIW, I wouldn't focus on lume/no lume for a DD; I'd just pick whichever dial appeals, aesthetically. If that happens to be a dial without lume, so be it. As others have suggested, it's probably not going to make much practical difference either way.

I've rarely found (super)luminova/ chromalight/ tritium paint to be of much use. On those occasions when I'm going to be working or fishing or something in total darkness, I'll wear my beater tool watch, which is a Nite Alpha---that has what I'd consider the most practical lume for a non-battery-powered watch: like Ball (as someone else mentioned), Tritium gas tubes, but the Nite uses T100, which is very bright. No sun-charging necessary.

My DD (currently in for service and a possible dial-swap) is sporty: wg oyster, domed bezel, lumed dial and hands. Makes the watch much less blingy than, say, a yg president, fluted bezel, diamond dial. But I get the sense that most DD-owners wouldn't want the setup I have. Some have even argued that it defeats the point of a DD. To each their own.

I wish at least the hands had some lume. I also like the stick dials with lume. I have a glacier Roman so no lume for me…my older lapis day date had lume on the hands but faded long ago.

Prefer lume on all my watches. While it's true that Rolex lume is nothing to write home about, I do find it helps in lower light situations to find the hands and markers a little quicker. But at the end of the day I'm not turning down a DD40 with romans simply for lack of lume. They are beautiful for sure.

IMHO, lume is neither required, expected or desirable on an older piece.

I do love the lume on my DSSD JC... though.

I've only got to walk from a light room to a darkish room and it lights up... It has to be the best lumed watch I own... My 115620 is dull by comparison as is such a let down on that front.

The "Lume" on all Rolex's is sub-par. If you want a watch with lume consider Ball.

IMHO, the DD doesn’t need lume. The deconstructed romans look perfect to my eye, they really suit the understated elegance of the Day Date.

Funny enough I own a wg dd40 blue dial and yg white dial, both with Roman’s. I just purchased a glacier blue with lume for the white gold as I cannot see the time on the watch at night at all.
I understand the wg model Doesn’t come with glacier blue however with Rolex’s new update to fluted bezel on the platinum I’m not sure I see the difference…

I’ll keep the blue Roman’s and swap it back In should I decide to sell the piece.

On DD, I do prefer Romans. Perhaps, I wear my DD40 in rotation and it is refreshing to see a different dial than the sticks on my other sports models.

I prefer the romans on mine. I'm ambivalent to it having loom.

I think on the DD40 the segmented romans are iconic. I can live without inferior night time legibility on the model.
