Poor man's Submariner
Click bait title, sorry. :)
New watch day yesterday, the BB58 of course. Obviously, I'm honeymooning but I really like these, their timeless design, and how different it is to my 12-series Submariner. People criticize the snow flakes and rivots but I like both. If I had one critism to give, it's the dial seems to be a mash up of geometric shapes - circles, triangles, bars and squares - but that's just nitpicking and I think it's an excellent design. It's funny, my wife and I made a few AD purchases last year and the Submariner was allocated to me in under two months. I enquired about the BB when supply around Toronto dried up and waited longer, same AD, three months for the Tudor. Go figure. ![]() |

Congrats! After all around. I have the black dial and absolutely love it. It is the perfect companion to my 116610LN! No date and slimmer design, plus the vintage details, it works so well in a collection that includes a Sub with super case and a date.
You will definitely enjoy having both and probably have a hard time choosing between them each day even though the Tudor costs less than 1/2 as much! |

I don’t have any Tudors, but from what I’ve seen, felt and read they are pretty good watches. But please, don’t try to compare them to Rolex.

Congrats on owning both! Only thing I don't like about the Tudor is the lack of crown guard. For me personally, I'd imagine it would be difficult for the Tudor getting any wrist time knowing that the Submariner is sitting at home.

Great pickup OP. I've got plenty of Wilsdorf siblings in the stable as well, and I marvel at how little daylight there is between them. Sure, there are differences, both subtle and less so, but as a value proposition the Tudors are hard to beat. Basically 8/9 tenths of the Rolex experience (quality wise) for a quarter the street value.

I think it's a nice watch but to expensive for what it is. It's only value is in the fact that's it's a submariner homage while being related to Rolex.

![]() The same could be said about the Sub and indeed most all Rolex professional references. I actually find this design language particularly practical and attractive. Wear it in good health! |

If you look at the competition the BB58 is exceptionally good value in my opinion. Very well put together and feels tougher than the Omegas I own. I'm lucky enough to own two. My only gripe is that the design of the crown makes it quite difficult to grip and lock in place.

It’s a handsome cousin to the Submariner and therefore a worthy comparison.

It's a great pick, not at all a poor man's Submariner. I think that appellation applied to the Tudor Subs from the 80's-90's.
Soon you will want the black version ;) Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Tapatalk |

Congrats! Beautiful watch. I want to like Tudor, I really do..... But they are just too thick and I can't get past that bracelet links. They look great, just not for me. I also fear if I bought a $4K watch to scratch an itch.. That itch will just get worse and buyer remorse will set in.

Cheers all.
I don't. Quote:

I didn't measure with calipers but the BB58 case thickness seems identical to my 41mm Submariner with the crystal adding maybe 0.5 - 1mm on top. Other popular Tudor models are thick but BB58s aren't at all. |

It's only a "Poor man's Sub" if you really wanted a Sub in the first place. Once that Sub has been obtained the Tudor becomes unnecessary.
For others it could be the end of the road, never had plans for a Sub. In that case the Tudor should be enjoyed for what it is: A very solid watch from a company with a storied history. Ha, so true! Quote:
