Rolex Submariner 5508 - Queries

Hello everyone,

Am posting photos of a watch that my father purchased many years back (> 30). I am not an expert but from some research I have done (including info from this forum), I can only gather that perhaps the hands and bracelet are not of the correct time period? Hands are did not patina the same shade and the bracelet I reckon should be a 7206 riveted? With regards to showing the serial and movement, I unfortunately am not able to do so because I do not have the tools. Am intending to bring this to a reputable watchmaker to service after getting some thoughts.

If additional photos from certain angles are required, would be happy to share.

Appreciate the advice from the experts on this site.

Many thanks in advance.

Can you get a pic of the dial with the coronet exposed, with larger pic?

Posting on behalf of OP. Click to access full resolution (what I received in an email from him).

I don't recall seeing a T<25 5508 dial, so I suspect it's either a service dial or aftermarket. My gut feelings are similar about the bezel insert, but I really don't know the reference well enough.

There is so much either suspicious or clearly wrong about this watch that I would start from a position of extreme skepticism and try to figure out if it is a genuine 5508 that has had a lot of service/aftermarket/replica parts fitted or if it is one of the replicas that are built from (mostly) Vietnamese copy parts.

Without having the watch in hand, and only having a few photographs to look at, I would like to see the engravings between the lugs, the machining marks and engravings inside the case back first to try and determine the authenticity of the case and case back.

Photos of the movement and more details of the crown and bezel would also be very useful, as would more photographs of the bracelet, end pieces and clasp details.

From what I can see so far my guesses are:

Case - suspect
Case back - undetermined
Bezel - aftermarket/replica
Bezel insert - aftermarket/replica
Crown - suspect
Dial - wrong type (as Dan said), probably aftermarket/replica
Hands - aftermarket/replica
Crystal - undetermined but it is similar to the correct shape
Bracelet - suspect
Movement - undetermined

It would be worthwhile for the OP to get a watchmaker experienced with the 5508 to remove the bracelet and case back for inspection prior to committing to any further work.

If you have sentimental value with this piece, that's fine...just don't invest in any work.

Thanks for the feedback @CTech. Will post more photos lest the movement and engraving till I get a professional to assist.

@1watch yes if the general consensus is that the watch has a large amount of aftermarket/unoriginal parts. I will likely leave is as it is.

Dial purports to be a 77-98 white service dial but it's fake with way too fat font etc etc - concur with others on all other comments

Thanks for the feedback Paul. Thanks again to the others who responded too. Might post a photo of the movement in the future if I get it opened.

But likely not to go in search of replacement parts based on the general consensus.

Appreciate all the help. Great community.
