Just curious how popular USB Flash Drives (aka thumb / jump drives) are with the group.

If you need to move information, particularly large files, from one place to another, VERY useful.

I keep several USB flash drives handy. The first one I purchased (from early 2005) was 512 MB, and my newer ones are all 4-8 GB in size.

I have 3 and never use them. I prefer to use my MobileMe account.

FWIW, I use a thumb drive in my work and it needs to be able to work in ALL computers (well Win 2000 and up) without any hassles.

For the last several years I have always used SanDisk Cruzer drives with the retractable USB connector. I always remove the U3 software.

I had a need to upgrade from my 4 GB drive to a 8 GB drive 2 months ago, so I buy another Cruzer. This time this model doesn't work in my 2005 Dell SC420 Power Edge server. It will work if I insert it in a notebook (no power adapter) mini hub first.

Well this will not work, as I never know what computers I may need to use this drive in. SanDisk did not return my email.

Anyway, I purchased a PNY Mini Attaché 8 GB and it works in all my systems. Recently upgraded to the 16 GB Mini Attaché and have had no compatibility issues with it either.

I keep a set of 'handy' apps on a drive so I can set up new computers easily (stuff like winamp winrar), but not on my keyring, as they always tend to break off.

That's why I like the models that attach to my keyring. More than once I have walked back in to the clients site to retrieve my "keys" from their PC.

I'm in IT so it's mandatory for me to have a flash drive. I also keep a portable 500 GB laptop drive handy as well.

I teach all my courses using PowerPoint with a laptop & projector, so I always have flash drives with me.

Once more people upgrade to Vista and Windows 7, you'll see a lot more being used in a different fashion. There's something called "ReadyBoost" which is a feature in the operating system. It will use an entire USB flash drive (or multiple drives in Win7) as cheap and fast cache for prefetching. It speeds up the OS a -ton-. I have a 4GB permanently in place on my desktop running Win7. Web pages load -instantly-.

I'll add that for backing up personal info, or confidential business information, people should be using USB drives with hardware crypto. I use a Sandisk Enterprise FIPS edition for important stuff... It has hardware AES 256 encryption, and is bonded in resin (hence the FIPS certification) so that the flash chips can't be accessed by way of disassembly.
