I did the unthinkable!

I took my BLRO and wore it in the streets of New York. Over the holiday weekend, I took it into the subway, ventured into times square and visited the mean streets of Brooklyn.

Are all the articles I've read about Rolex thievery exaggerated? It can't be... the internet says it's not safe to wear your watches. Clearly it must be an anomaly that nothing happened to me and my watch over the weekend.

Perhaps I'm losing my mind

the odds are very small that you will get mugged for your watch in NYC.

But still, the odds have gone up significantly from just a couple years ago. Both things can be true.

Be delusional all you want. Things are unquestionably worse in big cities. All it takes is one time for things to go sideways.

Enjoy your watch, but please be careful.

Odds are very very small.

They're def up but still very very small.

I personally wouldn't have it on short sleeve but to each's own.

You bought it to rock it.

Keep wearing it … we need to make this a legitimate experiment.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your watch, but there’s no need to be pompous about it when bad things actually do happen to good people.

Trying to explain instinct and your own familiarity with the place you live is impossible.

I did the same thing yesterday and posted about my 16710.

Usually I take off my watch when riding the subway. That's because of growing up when it was so far worse than it is even now.

It's so area and time dependent.

Nice watch!

The people worried about wearing their watches to NYC are mostly from bumblef*ck.

It’s the world’s financial center and some of the wealthiest people in the world live in the city. Manhattan has more millionaires living in it than most states in this country.

Of course things happen, but things can happen anywhere. I wore my Sub all over Brooklyn the other day and felt totally safe. Just pay attention to surroundings and don’t be an idiot, and you’ll be fine.

I’m glad you posted to show this to people.

Thank you and guess what? Our watches are not glued to our wrists..I take it off and put it in my pocket often depending on time and place.

it's still noticeably much worse than it used to be pre covid. that doesn't mean lock up your watch and never wear it because you should be ok, but also doesn't mean it's not worse. everyone could be one traumatic experience away from changing their opinion

It’s certainly worse, there’s no arguing that, but the amount of people I have seen interpreting that as a sign to never wear their watch in the city is pretty crazy.

Here's an interesting read about crime in NYC

I've lived here all my life and it was so much worse it's hard to imagine. Not saying it's good of course..I wouldn't know where to start about the complaints i have but that being said, I love this city and am grateful to live here...Usually!

https://www.lx.com/community/nyc-cri...rk-city/51473/

How dangerous is New York City?

New York City's crime rate is currently about 13.3 major crimes per 1,000 residents per year.

The combined rate of violent crimes – murders, rapes, and felony assaults – projects out to 2.8 per 1,000 residents per year.

Those figures are lower than most other major U.S. cities, according to the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice.

I agree with this and have all my watches insured for replacement value.

The problem is, you can't get a replacement very easily from an AD.

Due to the crowds, NYC is generally safe with residents telling me the media reports are somewhat exaggerated, but they still say being smart and aware of one's surrounding is important there.

True...That's why I have mine insured with the value it would cost from grey market.

Both ends of this spectrum are crazy. People who are afraid to wear their watches and people sneering at crime victims are just the extremes. The common sense and sanity lay between them.

yeah agreed, i'm still wearing the same watches but i do get a bit more uncomfortable at times and end up covering them up more than in the past (which was basically never lol). i just can't see being afraid to wear any watch, i would just sell them all if that was the case

the problem is the crowds were gone for 2 years. now the city is starting to pick back up since people started going back to the office this winter, but last year/this winter was a lot different since a majority of the crowds come from office workers/people commuting in to work and 2020 was a ghost town because everyone moved out

People might think I am crazy but it is safe until you are at the wrong place and time. I am all for wearing my watches but you need to be aware and if you are unsure of your surroundings either keep it at home or wear a jacket. They can't steal what they can't see if you catch my drift.

Isn’t that why you have them insured at replacement value …so you can buy them on the open (gray) market?

It will go fine if you pay attention to your surroundings, as anyone should even if they aren’t wearing expensive jewelry. I have seen plenty of people wearing RMs, Pateks, etc in NYC.

if you come to San Francisco, I would suggest an Apple Watch or Casio. There are many robbery cases here ( RM, Rolex) in the Bay Area
