Conflicting serial number references
I have an Oyster Perpetual -Date- 1500, serial number 281XXXX. I'm a bit confused as to its production year due to conflicting resources on the 'inter web'
1969 or 1971? Please enlighten! |

Serial numbers are not an exact science and are made up of guesses by enthusiasts, so vary widely.
I think that your number is too high for a '69, and would say that ~71 would be closer. Your watch is in the era where casebacks were stamped inside with the quarter and year.

Personally, I prefer the case back dating method for the earlier watches. As Larry mentioned, I would put a production date of 1971 on this watch based on the the 281xxxxx serial number which is where most of these watches seem to fall in that range.

In your place, I would be interested in seeing the inside of the case-back. The actual date of production is a nebulous thing that you will never know, and so may not really matter in a concrete sense. The date inside the case-back is tangible and real.
