Ouch!

Took a klutzy spill yesterday while carrying some packages and went shoulder first into a no parking sign pole. End result: two scraped knees and a nondisplaced fracture of the collarbone. Had I hit my head with the same force that I hit the shoulder it could’ve been a lot worse.
Normally I would just ride with it but my wife and I have a scheduled cruise coming up in 10 days and I’m not sure I can make it. If not I stand to lose the entire cruise fare unless the cruise line does me a solid and gives me a credit.
Fortunately the Sub came through the ordeal with flying colors, not a single mark scrape or scratch.

Ouch is right! So sorry you went through that, but I am glad that you didn't hit your head.

Are you sure you can't do the cruise? Are you signed up for shore excursions that would be too much for your current physical condition? What would you be doing on the cruise that you don't think you could handle?

I take it you didn't buy travel insurance when you booked the cruise. If you had, you wouldn't have to worry about a refund, so, yeah, you'd be up to the mercy of the cruise line.

No Kathleen, I didn’t buy travel insurance. Although I don’t have any excursions planned it’s really just the normal day to day stuff, trouble bathing, shaving, dressing, handling luggage, etc.
I also happen to be left-handed and of course it’s my left shoulder that’s fractured. The doctor advised me to be very careful or else I could displace the fracture.
I’m going to give it a few days to see if there’s even the slightest bit of improvement. I’m just bummed out right now.

Wow. Sorry to hear you took a spill. Could have been worse. My next door neighbor took a spill in February and he’s still in a wheelchair.

Hopefully in a few days, you’ll feel well enough to take the cruise. The hardest part will be getting to the ship. Once there, you can R&R on the ship.

I’m sure the cruise line will be more than happy to help get you onboard and all set up. Don’t lose the money.

Here’s to a great cruise and a speedy and full recovery.

Glad you’re okay Angelo. That was some spill. Carrying packages? Would have thought a guy like you would have people for that. Get some rest friend I hope the cruise works out for you and the Mrs.

Sorry to hear about your accident, Mate.
The thing is that at 30 years we just bounce off this stuff but post-60 it is a major issue.
A close friend stepped out of his 4WD on to a wet road and put his foot on to the wet white line for the parking space. Went down on his R knee smashing (and I mean smashing) the Patella into about a dozen pieces. Got it all wired up and repaired but took 12 months before he could use it normally again.
I try to tell myself to be a little more careful in my old age but it is difficult if you are otherwise fit (and still 30 in your head)
Good wishes for a quick recovery. Hope they look after you Re your Cruise.

You can make the cruise, I'm sure - Marine! If I heard it said once, I heard it a thousand times during my time in, suck it up butter cup (I'm only saying that due to your avatar, anyone else would get sympathy and comforting)

I had the misfortune of tearing a groin muscle and a half completely off the pelvic bone a couple days before a cruise once. It was a rough one to start with, as I couldn't take steps that separated my feet more than 10 inches or so. On the bright side, I got to take advantage of the handicap boarding etc haha.

Good Luck!

Best of luck making the cruise. I’m sure they’ve a sick bay on board, just don’t becoming a sick bay “commando”.

Semper Fi, Angelo!

I think you deserve a light-duty chit for this one.

Follow your doctor's advice and make sure that you heal well.

I’m sorry to hear Angelo, I hope you heal up quickly and in time for your cruise

Now be honest … the first thing you checked was to see if your Sub was ok - right?

Definitely light duty Grady until Sept 4th which is our rescheduled cruise date.

Thanks Brian. You nailed it. Despite the pain and blood I only had eyes for the Sub. Remarkably, not the slightest bit of damage. It would have been more costly than any doctor bills.

Okay, so here’s the cruise update.
Two hours on the phone with Royal Caribbean and I was able to reschedule for Sept 4th with about a $200 loss. That’s a clear win as far as I’m concerned since a cancellation this close to the cruise date usually means a complete forfeiture.

I guess they saw that we are loyal to the brand (15 cruises with Royal Caribbean) and I was able to provide them with medical documentation. If push came to shove I would have gone and just struggled through it but my wife insisted that since we were only losing a minimal amount that we just reschedule. I guess she didn’t look forward to catering to me.
By the time Sept 4th comes around I probably won’t be completely healed but certainly much better than I would be 9 days from now. And it would be our first cruise in 9 years after taking care of three elderly parents and a sick brother, all of whom have passed (Mom and my brother within the past 6 months). We used to go on two cruises per year until everyone started getting sick and that’s the main reason we haven’t been able to go. I didn’t want anything to stand in the way of enjoying this one to the max.
