Norton LifeLock - Thank You Ken

Years ago LifeLock was discussed here.

Ken had made a comment that he loved it. That it was a great service. So I decided it was worth the expense.

Over the years since I’ve likely disputed 3-4 fraudulently opened accounts. I’ve never had any issues because I had Norton.

About a year ago, I froze my credit and identity. Two times since then I’ve had fraudsters try to open credit cards in my name. Both times they failed and I was alerted immediately. Once was just yesterday.

And last month we moved my office. I’m order to switch the address with my bank I needed to fill out a pretty lengthy docusign. The minute I submitted it, I got a note from Norton. They simply wanted to confirm it was me doing it.

I’m super impressed and glad I did it.

So Ken, again, thank you my man. Really appreciate the advice, and as always, I’ll keep listening to it eagerly.

If you guys don’t have it, it’s worth looking in to.

I absolutely agree Seth!! I have Norton LifeLock through my bank and myidcare from the OPM. Norton is better however neither alerted me to a new account opened in my name until a few weeks later (supposedly the bank didn’t disclose the new account until the end of the month). The only way I knew is I got an email from the bank saying welcome with new account info. Credit is locked down and I advise everyone I know to lock theirs down, it’s easy to unlock when needed but certainly gives another safe guard against identity theft.

ID protection is very important in this time and age and have heard great reviews on Lifelock. I chose to freeze my credit with all three agencies which has served me well but unlike lifelock, you do not have active monitoring and notification.

Thanks for posting up this topic, guys, been wanting to look into this for some time. As an uninitiated, can someone help with 2 questions:

Is "freezing" your credit the same as "locking" your credit?

How do you freeze your identity, is it accomplished when freezing your credit, or a different process entirely?

1. Both do the same but usually credit "freeze" is free and "lock" usually carries a fee.

2. Yes, contact the three credit unions individually and go through the process of freezing/ locking your credit account. Most of it can be done online.

This is timely.
Late last week my son had unauthorized transfers from his Citizens bank SAVINGS account to a strange Bank of America account. He noticed on Saturday evening and the telephone rep tech support at the Citizens bank was able to freeze his accounts until he could visit a branch first thing Monday morning. It's worth noting that my son doesn't have any accounts with BoA. The thieves made trial passes by depositing $0.12 and $0.18 then a withdrawal of $0.30 and then the next day, from another BoA account numerically different by one digit, stole $9,500.
Like most young people he mostly uses a credit card then pays that off from the checking account that was not affected. The only use the saving account gets is paycheck deposits and then occasional transfers to cover the checking account but it's all within the same bank. There's no way anyone would have access to the savings account number as it's pretty isolated and not exposed to anything in any way that I can think of like a debit card would be.
So the bank did its investigation and my son closed both checking and savings accounts and then opened new ones within Citizens but his confidence is shaken and he's thinking of just changing banks altogether, even though it's a hassle.
Thieves suck.
