Rose Gold Daytona w/ Chocolate Dial - talk me out of it

I have the opportunity to acquire a RG Daytona w/ chocolate dial from an AD at retail. Though this watch was never on my radar (I’ve been holding out for the Pepsi), it does feel rather compelling, specially at retail.

For those that have/ had it, how does the watch wear, specially with an OF bracelet? Some of the pictures I’ve seen online indicate some amount of space between the wrist and the OF bracelet due to the presence of the ridges (?) on the underside of the bracelet. Make the entire watch seem “baloony” and slightly I’ll fitting. The watch also seems to wear substantially larger than it’s 40mm size would indicate. Any real like experiences to share on wearability? While the OF gives it an air of casual, would it be equally at home with office wear for instance (I usually wear long sleeve shirts, cuff links, formal trousers and shoes to work, no tie)?

How legible is the watch? The dial looks quite busy. And do you miss not having a date?

While not a seller/ flipper, I do like my watches to hold their value in the hope that they will eventually be passed on to my son. How would a PM Rolex fare in this regard, as PM watches have generally fewer takers than SS ones and are therefore less popular perhaps?

My current collection consists of a 39mm SS Explorer 1, a 42mm SS GP Laureato with blue dial and a 39mm RG ALS 1815 up/ down. The Laureato is currently my daily wearer to work. The ALS for when I need to wear a suit etc. and the Explorer mostly for weekends and running errands.

Please note that I have yet to see and try the watch in person and am hoping to get some opinions before I do so.

it wears super comfortable compare with my other steel bracelet rolexes. the rose gold case and the chocolate dial is a perfect match and the black ceramic bezel is just icing on the cake! its a perfect summer watch. legibility I would say on par with the 116500 black dial, anyway legibility is not that important as you can always use your mobile phone to tell time when needed.

It wears beautifully. Very comfortable.. it is something of a statement watch, as most any full gold watch is.

The dial is very busy, agreed. It’s hard to read in the dark, but then, does anyone really NEED a wristwatch to tell the time anyway?

You should buy it at MSRP. Owning it is a good experience. In fact you’ve spurred me to wear it today

Why would you want anyone to talk you out of it?

You're either going to look at it or you're not.

Because it was never on my radar and I’ve never been into or considered chronographs. I would like to understand the cons so that when I do get a chance to see/ try it, I know what to look out for and tick off those points while making a considered decision of whether to pull the trigger or not.

If you have the funds and won't prevent you from a Pepsi if you got the call a week later then sure go for it

The dial was too dark for me during my brief stint with it. The contrast with the black subdials is only apparent either outside or in very bright lighting.

Legibility would be my main issue with it. I also think it’s a lot of money for a rubber strap; I’d want the gold bracelet if I went PM, YMMV

Rose Gold Daytona w/ Chocolate Dial - talk me out of it

I was offered this dial but in full PM a few days ago and passed. I had requested a different dial color and although I was tempted to grab it - given a bird in the hand and all that - ultimately I decided to wait for the one I originally wanted.

You have to go and see it I order to decide. You should know immediately if it is right for you. But hey, it’s a PM Daytona, it’s going to be amazing.

You should buy it. Pass on a PM Daytona at your own peril

I had the RG/Chocolate on alligator. Arabic dial.

Its a beautiful watch, and if I could get another at retail I would.

I prefer the Arabic "racing" dial but could happily live with the chocolate with black sub dials.

Legibility isn't great, but then no Daytona has anything close to good legibility anyway.

If you love it, buy it. If you don't, pass and leave it for someone who does

Easy pass for me. Brown dial watches just don’t suit my taste at all.

I was on the fence somewhat when one became available to me and I was in your position. I got it, thinking worst case I'll sell it if it's not a keeper and move on. Well, several years later it's still in my collection and one of my most worn watches. I absolutely love it and definitely one of my favorites. Oysterflex is so comfortable, the gold gives heft up top but still very manageable. Can wear casual/sport or dress and the chocolate is amazing. Do it.

I could never get my head around spending big bucks on a wrist watch with a rubber band. It seems like a current fad in my opinion.

The watch is beautiful! Very very comfortable, and in it's own way is not too blingy. Yet, the people who know, know what you are wearing. Gets more attention than the Panda. That should tell you everything you need to know. And oh, the chocolate face? Good enough to eat! Don't pass on this.

You have to go see it in person.

In the flesh, I have only seen the Rose Gold OF with the same chocolate panda dial. I didn't know it existed and when I saw it, made me fall in love with OFs.

Also, the YG daytona with the "paul newman" dial is also way better looking in person. So good that I bought one, despite waiting for other ones.

What was also interesting to me is that I had lost some interest chasing a white dial daytona as a grail after wearing a precious metal daytona. Panda daytona felt really cheap next to my oysterflex. Don't get me wrong, I'll still buy it, but the feeling is just very diff to me.

How could you say no to such a gorgeous timepiece?

At least you should try it on and see how you feel, if you don't really care for it, it will be a good luck for the next person in line.

Sorry, OF. Oysterflex. Is it basically the same build, same „flaps“ on the underside etc?

I love mine, but beware if it is your first foray into PM watches you may be moved to acquire a full PM with bracelet next :-)

It is very comfortable and the RG is really striking in the flesh!

We have the RG OF on black dial and love it, but since you’re asking for the “con” of such watch, I can give you a few.

1) Too small for some people - I like small watches so that’s doesn’t bother me but it is smaller than 40mm in real live. More like a 39mm not much bigger than your Explorer.
2) No date - doesn’t look like that matter to you based on your collection.
3) Brown dial is more hyped, but less contrast with sub-dial - We got ours at market price (yeah, it hurts), but we could have picked the brown dial. I liked the pink sub-dial in the black version more than the black sub-dial with the brown dial.
4) the clasp stretch like crazy - maybe that’s just how my wife wears her watch…

You can tell I’m nitpicking. It’s really a lovely watch.

Also agreed

One of my absolute most worn, most loved, favorite watches

The combo of RG, Chocolate, black bezel and OF is one hell of a combo. I don’t usually get a lot of attention/compliments on any watch I wear/own but this one? A bunch

Would you prefer a black ceramic bezel on a full RG bracelet
Or the traditional gold bezel ? I would love for Rolex to add the ceramic bezel on the full RG Daytonas.
