Icon5 Bought from Boutique in Greece

Hello,

I am a completely new to this world. Over the past couple weeks, I have been trying to buy a Rolex during my business trip in Europe. Everywhere I went, they told me nothing in stock. At last, in Greece there was one available. It’s not my first choice of watch, but decided to take it considering how rare I’ve read it’s been to find at a boutique or AD. It’s a two tone datejust, fluted bezel, black dial with diamonds, oyster bracelet. I don’t know if this is a very sought after model..

Getting around 20% VAT back.

Did I do the right thing by purchasing it? Thanks for the help.

Edit:

I like the watch and I am never going to resell it.

What I wonder is if I actually got lucky with this watch or if this is one of the more easily available models right now (considering the lack of inventory everywhere)

You didn’t do the right thing if you don’t like the watch and just want to sell it on as you’ll make a loss on that. If you bought it to wear and enjoy then great.

The only question that matters is do you like it? If you bought it because it’s “sought after” by others then no.

Good move, if you love the watch.
If not . . . bad move.

Not particularly hard to get but what does it matter anyway? Enjoy it in good health and welcome to the forum!

You should be receiving around 24% VAT refund but I don't know how this could be set off with US import dues.

PS : We like pics here...

The thing about these watches, don’t let regret cloud your enjoyment. You did the right thing if you love this watch. I still have my first watch from the early 60s and enjoy looking at it whenever I wear it. Have fun

Have to agree with you 100% that should be the one and only reason to buy any Rolex watch. Because you want to own and wear it hopefully in good health for many years to come that's the most important thing.

Two tones are not really sought after. Most are available in the states with some patience.

If you bought it because you like the watch, congratulations. If you bought it because it was the only "Rolex" you can find, then horrible purchase.

Does it matter if you got lucky? It's about the passion, not about wearing something everyone else wants or can't get.

some AD’s take out two tone DJ’s on the weekends and put them in the case for purchase. while it seems like it’s not easy to get any rolex these days, a TT datejust is probably the easiest one to get (depending on reference)

if you got over excited because you saw it for sale and thought let me buy it for that reason alone then i’m not sure if you made a mistake or not however you just said you like it and don’t plan on selling it so… wear in good health and enjoy.

Sounds like a wonderful watch! I love the variety DateJust allows. Got any photos?

It’s not a particularly desired config but if you like it then that’s all that matters. Congrats on your first rolex.

TT Datejust, fluted bezel, black dial with diamond hour markers is gorgeous timepiece. Most ADs don't have anything ready available nowadays. If you love it, I think you're pretty lucky that you got it without waiting.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy wearing your gorgeous timepiece in good health.

I don’t believe that you truly like this watch despite your edited post. The nature of the questions are not of someone who bought something they liked. These kinda posts on here wind up with OP using selling the watch later on.

For example, look at that thread a couple weeks ago where the OP wanted a OP41, but bought a speedmaster and is now selling it at a loss because he wanted the OP41 from the get go. The speedmaster was his second choice too.

Easy to get. I walked into two ADs with little and no purchase history a few months ago. I was offered simar DJs (SS slate dial diamonds and TT white dial, respectively). I wanted to get a feel for the DJ41 before expressing interest in the mint dial.

If you really wanted that particular watch it was a good move. That having been said, two tone datejusts on oysters are not hard to come by. The stainless models are harder to get than the two tones and generally the jubilee is a little more in demand in my opinion.

As others have said, that model is not particularly difficult to find. Datejusts themselves are not the rarest of watches, and a two tone model with diamonds is not going to be in strong demand. That being said, if you like and enjoy the watch then it was a good decision

You're asking if you got lucky to spend *fifteen thousand dollars* on a two tone, diamond dial Rolex, which wasn't your first choice?

Just shooting straight with you OP, as others are being reluctant to do so. If you truly enjoy the watch then by all means it's a great buy, but if you just bought something for the sake of buying a Rolex, no, this wasn't a 'deal' whatsoever. That's actually considered a bundle watch at some ADs.

VAT refunds are less than initially hoped…

Greek VAT is 24%, so the total paid with VAT was 1.24 times the base price, and so you get back the 0.24, which as a percentage of price paid is 0.24/1.24 = 19.4%.

What is and is not hard to get depends on a multitude of factors. Anecdotally, a TT DJ with diamonds doesn't strike me as a difficult watch to obtain. It's the kind of watch which is usually for sale at my AD, in among all the exhibition pieces.

Not that it matters. If you love it, want it, and now have it, you are fortunate indeed.

It's a win, esp if you are being paid in dollars, spending euros, getting vat back.
