So many posts here that BBs are not like the Submariner, yet there it is. That Rolex crown is huge.

It's either a 6538 or a 5510. The 8mm crowns look massive on the 38mm case. They are my absolute grail pieces and if you go to the Rolex Passion Report website there are tons of exceptional articles devoted to the big crown subs and the evolution of the very early Submariners. They deep dive into the materials used, how they made the dials, the radium hands, how the very first iterations came about, etc. Tudor also had big crown subs, so their Black Bay 58 is actually a redesign of the first Tudor big crown, which itself was a redesign of the Rolex big crown. It had all Rolex parts except for the movement and dial, hands.

What's interesting is when you actually handle one of these early subs in person, all of those beautiful details with the gilt dial print and hands are so small so it's hard to really appreciate it in real life without magnification. The bracelet feels like a soda can and the watch head is really small. I haven't handled a big crown but I did have the chance to wear and handle a 6536 small crown Sub at my AD last summer. Those had a 6mm crown so they looked tiny.

There are several members here who own big crown subs and they are remarkable pieces.

Yep that’s a 6538. Not mine in the photo but I got to play with one once and it’s something else to hold one of those. I just thought about how it was like holding the catalyst of the entire category of sports watches. You can see the DNA in everything now.

To me it looks like this specific Tudor reference was designed to pay homage to this particular Rolex Sub reference. The resemblance is uncanny.

You probably never knew this because it’s not correct. The 58 is an homage to the the 1958 Tudor 7924.
