Polishing a flea bite?

Hello,

I just noticed a big flea bite on my months old sub and i have no idea where it came from because i never banged it against anything. I know dings and scratches tells stories but I'm still pretty devastated.

Is this something that can be polished out or does it need some laser welding to fix?

Welcome to the forum. This isn't a big deal. Can be polished during service. Lots more scratches to come before then. I know how you feel but it's all part of the ownership. Enjoy your watch and above all, enjoy life

Just break the shape edges and polish. Do not blend. You would end up with just a low spot without changing the shape of the watch. Next time you take your watch in service with RSC, RSC would take care of that.

This is the poster child for laser welding.

Good news is that it’s not on the edge. I’m sure it doesn’t look as bad in person. As long as you know that it can be remedied, which it can, then you can live with it for now

…if you don’t know how it happened…it could happen again after you have had it restored?

Is the plastic still on ?

Laser welding is a pretty expensive and invasive procedure for a single nick that may happen on the way home from the welder.

Chasing every scratch and knock can drive you crazy. It is very likely that when you need to have the case refinished in the future, this nick will be all but invisible.

Sorry do you mean actual flea as in the insect? They can bite a home through steel that big?? I’ve been bitten by fleas and it didn’t hurt and my arm is not as strong as stainless steel lol

That looks pretty deep to be polished out IMHO. Hard to tell from the picture but I’d say laser welding is the better option

That thought crossed my mind too judging by how it looks. However, I hope the OP would know the difference.

Stuff happens. Over time you'll be attacked by numerous invisible fleas that will leave their mark. Have it handled at a service that's a long way in the future.

You won’t notice kisses and dings after 2 years. They build character and tell the story.

I agree with Brian, it looks too deep to polish out. Just have the rough edges smoothed out at some point and then just forget about. If that is your only ding you will be lucky.

Laser welding for a tiny little nick/scratch? Do you get your entire door painted each time you get a door-ding?

OP - put down the macro lens and pour yourself a stiff drink. It's Friday and you're wearing a Rolex!

To remove a ding the material around it needs to be removed to the bottom of the ding and somehow blended. Would be interesting to see what RSC would do with that but that looks deep.

The plastic must still be on there as that appears way too dull for a one month old Sub.

Thanks everyone, I feel better as long as I know it can be remedied at some point in the future. For those wondering, there's no sticker or plastics on the watch it was all gone by the time I walked out the AD.

In the short few months I haven't been babying this watch at all. It's gone swimming in the ocean and been to a few countries. Yet the bracelet is pristine with not even a hairline scratch on the brushed surfaces, but I managed to ding/scratch up the polished sides of the case.

I would double and triple check to see if ALL the stickers were actually peeled off by your AD. I have found stickers months down the road, when I would have bet my bottom dollar that they had all been removed. You'd be surprised...

Yeah, reading threads like these make me want to go right outside and chop down a tree wearing my Rolex, just because. I wish we lived in a world where, rather than being impressed by someone wearing a Rolex, we were impressed by the most beat-up Rolex, because that means the thing was used and actually has a story.

Absolutely do not polish that and don't leave it with anyone who is going to. That is way too deep to simply be grinding away without changing the visual appearance of the case. A professional needs to be the one cosmetically refinishing that.

It's really not that cosmetically unsettling. Just enjoy the watch until service time in a few years and then let RSC handle this when that time comes.

And what exactly is that story?

Let it be, the RSC will take care of that together with all the other dings in 10 years or so.

That’s the nice thing about a service, you get your watch back looking brand new
