A good winter coat?
Can anybody tell me what winter coats you recommend? I realise it's summer ( uk ) but sometimes you can pick up a bargain on winter coats at this time of year.
Some of our members in Canada where it gets REALLY cold must know what to buy to keep toasty in the winter. I like the look of the Canada Goose Chilliwack. What else should I consider? |

Columbia and North Face make some decent winter jackets that you should be able to look up on line.
The Chilliwack coats you mentioned are really good as well.

All depends on what you intend to be doing while wearing the coat. do you require breathability? Waterproofness? Or simply something really warm?
I am a fan of Barbour waxed cotton coats with liners in the winter, for non-aerobic sporting activities. But for hunting, its great, as well for work engagements and around town activities. My "sport coat" to go with my sport rolexes goes to North Face, 686 or Marmot, as they also double as my ski coats.

It's difficult to suggest when I don't know your taste, but you can never go wrong with www.llbean.com. Wonderful toggle coats, down jackets, and in fact, any type of coat you'd want. They are likely at a good price now since it's summer. Happy shopping.

What type of style do you like and for what use (i.e. everyday, dress, snow)? I got a L.L. Bean coat when I lived in New York that I could wear to Siberia but I never wear it here because of the warmer weather. I bought a nice Burton jacket for when I go to the snow here. I have my warm leather jackets for riding my motorcycles.

In the UK I would think something water proof with a zip-in liner would be the most functional, casual solution. Check out REI.

I am thinking about getting one of these this year. Perhaps a darker color. If you wear with confidence, it would look normal.

For warmth, I love www.featheredfriends.com
Much warmer and more pliable than my North Face. My wife and I each have a vest, a jacket, and a sleeping bag. Oh, and a down comforter as well.

On a serious note, I bought myself one of those GoreTex ski jackets last year. They are light, truly waterproof, and if you choose the right insulation level, very warm. Many brands carry them, the Northface and K2 are just two of them. I also have a wool pea coat, like the one in the picture. This is my 'other' winter coat

When I lived in Minnesota I had a Columbia. It was pretty warm. I would think in the UK you would want wool, since it insulates even when damp.
Do you want a parka, a ski jacket, or a long coat? The LL Bean Baxter State Parka is about the warmest thing out there. I just don't like parkas. |

I have Nautica 3 in 1 system jacket. The zip in fleece liner is nice. Also have Pea Coat that is quite warm.
