Rolex is planning to open a new production site

Rolex is waiting for the autorisations to buy a 100'000m2 land. Opening is planned for... 2029. ;)

The odd part, is that it would be more "inside" the country (Bulle, Fribourg). Meaning they would hire local. Contrary to Geneva were they mainly hire "frontaliers" (working in Switzerland but living in France). But not totally a surprise as some of its suppliers are nearby (Bumotec).

The timeline is very interesting and seems suggestive of pretty meticulous planning IMO.

In Geneva, the Socialist and Green parties are very strong and it is getting everyday more difficult to expand a business.

As an exemple, Rolex is located next to an area called Acacias. In the 1960s it was outside the city and was purely for the industry. Today, the city has grown around it and wants to absorbe it.

This October, one more step has been passed to transform the area with mixed activities (=> housing).

This is a clear political signal that it will be more difficult for Rolex to expand in the future.

Bulle is located in the Canton of Fribourg. The authorities are very friendly with specialized industries because they need high revenue employment and have a lot more cheap land than in Geneva.

Good news. They can pull their revenue from Geneva and move to a more accommodating and friendly location.

They will stay in Geneva, but they are also sending a message.

Like Thierry Stern who sent a message to the authorities to be more entrepreneur friendly 10 years ago. Officially he moved out of Geneva (Mies, Vaud) for private reasons, but coincidentally he had issues with the tax authorities (He was 100% right to move). Issues got solved and he moved back. https://www.bilan.ch/entreprises/pou..._quitte_geneve

This is a new site (if they get the autorisations) which has been leaked in the local media this Monday. Rolex has not commented on it now. It is in Bulle, not Biel.

Bulle and Biel are 2 different cities. :)

BTW, Bienne/Biel has 2 names because it is a bilingual city, French and German.

Rolex to build new factory in western Switzerland for 2029 opening

Bloomberg and others report:

Rolex to build new factory

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...er-rts-reports

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/rolex-p...rland/48076474

Rolex plans new factory and 2,000 jobs in Switzerland

The luxury Swiss watch brand Rolex hopes to invest CHF1 billion ($1 billion) in a new production site at Bulle in western Switzerland that should result in 2,000 new jobs.

The watchmaker hopes to build a new production site at Bulle in canton Fribourg, which should be inaugurated in 2029, Swiss public television, RTS, reportedExternal link on Monday.

The deal still needs to be finalised: the sale of two plots of land (100,000m2, the equivalent of ten football pitches) still requires the approval of the Bulle parliament.

Contacted by RTS, Rolex did not wish to comment until the deal is signed. However, the cantonal economics department told RTS that the signing is planned next month.

“A project of exceptional magnitude is on track in Bulle with the prestigious company Rolex,” declared Oliver Curty, president of the Fribourg government, adding that the authorities would “ensure that it succeeds".

Haters gonna always hate.. don’t mind them. I’m glad we’ve someone like you on this forum to bring the hot news straight from the motherland of Rolex.

Do you think this is just about increasing production or is Rolex possibly looking into expanding into movement decorating or more complex movements etc..
