I wanna complain...

This whole thing about the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG bracelets has me befuddled. I understand LA faced cancer and beat it (for now) and yes, he's won seven Tours de France (although he only 'races' one race a year so he better win it).

My issue is this: The Livestrong bracelets were designed as a fundraiser for cancer research. Fine, noble cause. It also represents the ideology of clean living and yet every time I see someone wearing a Livestrong bracelet, more often than not, these people are overweight (sometimes morbidly) and smoking.

Sure, they may be wearing it to support someone with cancer... yadda yadda... but if you're going to wear something that represents something, isn't it hypocritical to act in a way that is diametrically opposed to what the bracelet stands for?

I just saw three people outside wearing them... all having a smoke break. Smoking causes cancer. Livestrong bracelets support cancer research. Are they hoping the research $$ can cure them when whey get cancer???

I don't get it. Okay, now I'll shut up.

Good point, John, but what exactly is a LIVESTRONG bracelet?

Wearing it shows that you support the organization, and that you gave $1.

I bought two cases of them -- $200, and I give them out to people who understand the cause, and who I think will appreciate them. (Not to people who want a yellow band to add to their collection of other colors.)

Well, despite my issues with Lance (John knows what I'm talkin' about) I certainly think that any celebrity that uses their fame for good is doing the world a service. However, as with most things like this, now we see arm bands everywhere. I see the yellow ones from Lance, red ones for blood donation (my wife has one of these - I'm not able to give blood or I'd have one too), the white bands for famine relief, and I've also seen blue and purple bands and I don't know what they are for.

I think I should design a coloured arm band dedicated to the cause of stamping out the frivolous use of coloured arm bands.

This idea from a charter member of the S.S.O.A. (Society to Stamp Out Acronyms).

Oh yes, I don't need an arm band to remind me to live strong........as any person that suffers from a long term illness knows, you simply do it every day.

Yeah, I know... Cycling is hardly an athletic pursuit compared to archery.

Actually it's not frivolous to people of certain groups. School kids use the various colors to indicate the level of sexual activity they've reached, or are willing to undertake. They're also useful to the drug dealing community to indicate what products a particular dealer handles, and with whom he/she is affiliated. See? Not so frivolous as you thought.

As for the "Live Strong" slogan, the afflicted might not need a reminder, but we big fat-assed couch potatos benefit from that bright yellow hint that we should get up and move our bodies once a month or so, lest we turn to an amorphous blob of gelatin.

Bloody hell Peter what a sad sick world we are now in,when children and
drug dealers use these bands as some sort of signal devise.

Well, with John being a cyclist (as you are) he knows what the sport is (in)famous for at that level. Archery at a high level is certainly more of an athletic pursuit than a chemical pursuit, but I'm not sure you can say the same thing about cycling. I certainly have my own thoughts about Lance and how clean he really is (yes, I know he's never had an "adverse analytical finding" to use the proper term) but of course I can't prove it. It only means that he is very good at not getting caught in my opinion. As I said above, my feeling about him aside, I certainly admire what he has done with the foundation.

As for the alternate uses of the arm bands, well that's just sad.

Move your body once a month? Now Peter, let's not go crazy.....
