Watches and Horology is in trouble - Read
I love watches, been collecting for 20 years, but I think high end horology is in big trouble.
How do you guys feel about collecting watches when now there are replica watches, that are so good, even Rolex can't tell if it's fake? There are replicas out there (high end ones) for like 1000-2000 dollars, that is a perfect resemblance to a genuine Rolex in every aspect to include the movement. I do not support replicas at all, but there a certain way I feel that I know I can get a replica, for 10% of the original price of a genuine Rolex, that is so good, to include the movement that no one can tell. What you guys think about this? Is the watch industry in trouble? Should all the high end watches put some sort of chip or bar code in the watch that is used to authenticate? Because technology is at the point anything can be replicated to pretty much perfection. Touchy subject, but this is an important one for all watch collectors to be aware of. |

Convincing fakes were around when I bought my 1675 GMT in 1967 - they're nothing new. And, by definition, they are cheap, so it is always possible for a watchmaker to identify the fakes. End of story.
