Rolex’s attempt to attract smartwatch fans?
The sun is shining, the grass is green,
The orange and palm trees sway. There’s never been such a day, In Beverly Hills, L. A. But it’s late December and complex, I am longing to understand Rolex…. (Edit: the Watch in the photo below isn’t mine - wish it was) No, I’m not dreaming of a White Christmas - but I had a hair-brained idea about Rolex’s reason to come up with the left-handed GMT. The idea dawned on me as I donned this exhibition watch at my nearby AD. ![]() I believe it might be Rolex’s way to attract the Apple Watch fans (or other smartwatch fans) as buyers. Especially those who still wants to wear the AW. Here’s my thought: there aren’t as many lefties as there are righties, Capiche? So that limits the addressable market methinks. But all the righties who own smartwatches (and want a Rolex) have an empty right wrist that’s perfect for this black & green beauty. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I believe the majority of smartwatch people didn't wear a watch before. There may be some Rolex owners/future owners that perhaps want both, but that seems totally niche to me. Most smartwatches have a setting where you can specify left or right hand as well.
Edit, perhaps I missed the subtle flex, and congratulations are in order. ![]() |

No - it was an exhibition only watch.
But was glad they pointed it out to me. That’s when I got the notion of righties wearing their smartwatch and a Rolex. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

For many years I wore mechanical on left, wrist computer on the right. So opposite what you're thinking. A year or so ago gave up on wearing iWrist things.

Nope.
Apple watch wearers will not start wearing 2 watches.

Apple Watches are incredible if you’re into that sort of thing. I have a buddy that’s in his mid 30s with a rare heart condition, the Apple Watch notified him something was off and got him to the hospital. Pretty awesome if you need something like that. But it’s weird to wear for me, i need a regular watch.

A humorous notion, but lefties have been around long before the Apple Watch.

My wife mostly wears an Apple watch now and that's only for medical reasons. It started out being for monitoring strange heart issues which were deemed to be transient and things were improving. Then she recently got Covid rather badly and has had ongoing issues that are directly related to it where the Apple watch has come to be most useful. But she had to buy the phone as well so it could become fully functional.
She rather dislikes the thing and as soon as she gets the opportunity, she ditches it for her Rolex in preference. Keep safe and simply wear what brings you pleasure ![]() |

I used to wear a mechanical watch on my left wrist and an AW on my right. Did that for about a year. The trick is to where the smallest size AW so it looks less like you are wearing two watches. I think I got one or two comments during the year span I did this from people.
The only reason I stopped is I lost my AW charger. I tried winding, but no luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

People didn't stop wearing traditional analog/digital watches cause of lefties, nor did lefties start wearing watches at the advent of smartwatches. They simply adapted.
People stopped wearing analog/digital watches because the time was everywhere - on PC's, Smartphones, etc. As their batteries and bands wore out, they simply didn't replace them. People started wearing smartwatches when the features and functions made sense. Rolex simply jumped on the "Destro" bandwagon to fill a whole in their portfolio. It's simple marketing 101. |

Interesting theory, I thought the Apple Watch was going to kill the Swiss watch industry about 6 years ago….. now I rely on a “Magic eight ball” instead of my intuition.

I dont think Rolex has to "attract" anyone, nor do they care at the moment with wait lists the way they are lol
