It finally happened…

Just got a call a few minutes ago from my AD who offered me an all black Sub date. HOWEVER he was awesome enough to get me a Starbucks last year so I had turned down the all black sub.

Now, a part of me is very fearful that I’ll Be blacklisted from getting the pieces I put in a request for 🥺

I explained that he had gotten me the sub previously so I sincerely appreciated the follow-up, but I would ultimately have to pass.

What do we think boys and girls? We I ever get ‘the call’ again?

I’ve bought 2 Rolex, and 4 other watches from them (Tudor, JLC, Omega).

I think the ADs understand you’re a legitimate watch buyer for what you want. Kind of too much money to buy whatever they offer you from time to time.

Hope so! Sent him a follow up email thanking him, and reiterated why I had passed, and that I would feel odd taking a watch from someone who has truly desired it.

Tell him you already have the Sub you always wanted with your Starbucks and are now looking for a GMT, or whatever.

Not going to hurt turning down a watch that someone else will pick up pretty quickly. What else do you want, if anything?

Yeah, we discussed that as I’ve mentioned a GMT of any combination I’d jump at as it’s the complication that intrigues me . He also reiterated that he see’s that I have others on my wish list, but wanted to offer it to me, and that if I had passed, he can call the next person. Fingers crossed!

This was the right way to handle this situation. I think you're fine for future calls and purchases.

I think you’re the only one with any insight into your relationship with your SA.

And i think you should sort your wish list out so you don’t have any more awkward conversations with them.

There is no detriment to passing on an in-demand watch for good reason. And already owning a SubC is one of them. A note will be made in your profile. But not one to your detriment. Unless you said "you cannot afford it" :P

I don’t think it will take much more of this phenomenon to really start loosening up availability for everyone.

No worries. It's not like it was a special order that he's stuck with.

The obvious question is why did he offer you the sub? I think a good thing to do with your sales person is to be clear on the 2-3 pieces you want. If you told him/her you wanted the black sub and then you turned it down when they got it for you, then they may be hesitant to offer in the future. However, if it was just a nice gesture from them, then you’re probably fine! My .02

Nah, I think you did the right thing and you should be fine. I'm sure he understood when you explained to him that he recently got you your Starbucks, and that was the reason why. Now, if you turned down BOTH the Starbucks and the Sub LN, he might not be too excited to call you on the next piece.

I'm sure with you passing on this one, it really did make someone else's day!

That watch was gone by the end of the day. They won’t give your refusal a second thought.

The only thing "Finally Happening" is people turning down watches they don't want, and finally letting someone else who actually wants it to have a chance to buy.

A return to normalcy will put an end to this ridiculous "I was offered XYZ, but..." type of behavior.

Still laughing on that « was offered » phenomenon when you actually had to buy it. What is happening is your refusal. And for this you deserve lot of respect. Good !

Exactly. We need more of this. If the money to be made quickly flipping the piece that you bought just because “I was offered it” is insignificant, things will loosen up a LOT.

I don't think you will have any issues, I was offered a Sky D right before Christmas, said thank you very much of thinking of me. (It was not one on I was looking for) Said thanks so much but it's one that I think is to larger for my wrist. My AD is great and I wished them a Merry Christmas and he did the same. All good.

I really do not understand the mind of an AD, but I would think they couldn't care less if someone decides they don't want a hot selling watch for whatever reason and turn it down. Watch dealers are like any other dealer of goods. Where there is a waiting list for whatever, it makes no difference to the AD who gets the item as long as it is sold. The only time a merchant should be angry is where a customer special orders something which is not paid for in full and then does not buy the item when it comes in. And, that dealer does not have a ready customer for the item so it will just sit in inventory.
