Eames Chair?

Have been aware of them for a while, I think Washington Post had article on the popularity of the chair amongst millennials with the allure more to status than functionality.

But referenced the longevity of pieces with one interviewee having one for more than sixty years.

Any one have one?

Which color combo did you get. Did you go regular/tall?

How long have you had it and has it aged well?

Bonus if you post photo of how you incorporated it in your space!

Cheers!

Hey Dan, we've owned an Eames Chair since 1998.

We went with walnut and traditional black leather.

The chair is remarkably comfortable and my favourite place to read, listen to music or have an afternoon nap. I use it every single day.

The leather patinas beautifully over time and the wood has darkened ever so slightly with age. I'm careful not to have it sitting in direct sunlight, but otherwise I haven't done a single thing to maintain it except dust it off once a week like everything else.

It's by far my favorite piece of furniture and a classic piece to add to your home.

I’d love to get one of these. I have a hard time finding comfortable chairs for my tall frame. Beautiful chair Brian.

I’m 6’2 and it works beautifully. They do have a tall version which basically adds to the height of the upper back/headrest. I don’t think it’s necessary and IMHO the classic is the way to go as it’s just the right proportions.

It’s definitely a status thing, for not just millennials given how popular it is in most interior design magazines/photo shoots. That said, it is also very comfortable and not just something that people have just to flex their money.

I would try it out if you get a chance. I thought I would be regular but after testing it out in a showroom I prefer the tall.

As for color/leather combo, the traditional black is the most replicated and I feel like if it’s a different color combo ppl are not going to ask is it real as much.

Lastly, this is the case for most designer furniture but if you don’t have someone in the industry that can get you a discount reach out to a wholesaler to get a cheaper price.

I bought one in February last year, so far I'm very happy with it, I spend a lot evenings of reading and listening to music in it.

I'm in Europe so I had to buy it from Vitra, they have the Eames license here. It is an American cherry version with regular black leather, tall back.

I almost bought one about five years ago before deciding to go with another Ekornes lounge as it was a touch more comfortable for me and my first one is still going strong after 25 years.

The Eames will last a lifetime as it is an extremely high quality product. There are even some reproductions that match the quality of the original at about 40% of the price if you don’t care about the brand name. I believe the original Eames patent has expired so it’s not like a Rolex knockoff. My designer recommended one made in NC that was about $3000 as opposed to the $7500 on the Eames.

I’ve had mine (walnut & MCL white) for over five years now. It gets used multiple times each day. I’m 6’ 5”, so I bought the tall variant. I’d echo everything that Brian said in his post.

You should also know that it goes on sale twice a year. When it does, it’s always discounted 15%.

I think the Eames is a beautiful looking chair, but I too didn't find it as comfortable as Ekornes chairs.

We have 3 of them now. They ain't cheap either.

Just another option.

I picked that mid century piece up about 15 years ago at a store in Kensington Market called Bungalow. Apart from the ELO, one of the few new items purchased for my home, most of my furniture was purchased in mid century shops like Zig Zag, Machine Age Modern, Philz, and some other places that aren’t around any longer.

I bought an Eames-like chair (same look) for around $1000 about 7 years ago. The leather is soft and it looks nice, but I prefer to sit in our leather sofa recliners.

I have a hard time shelling out that much money for a chair...but then again, I'm spending stupid money on watches and sneakers, so my opinion is probably worthless.

Hi Dan,
I actually reached out to Brian a while back on the Eames chair as well. While I haven’t purchased one yet I came across this more affordable alternative as another option. Visit the website: https://theiconicchair.com

It’s a famous design from a luxury brand. I don’t think durability or quality alone can justify the price tag, but I may just be too poor to appreciate a $7000 chair.

These chairs probably do have resale value, but in general I’m bearish on fancy furniture. I think a lot of folks who run into financial trouble ultimately end up regretting any fancy furniture they own. I like having furniture I could easily replace multiple times if needed, but that’s just me.

I got a very comfy chair from a company called byKallevig a few years ago - I think they referred to it as “inspired by the Eames style” or something similar. A pretty much identical chair, solidly built with nice leather.

It was all of about £400 or £500 so it’s not as much of a problem when the 4 year old uses it as a trampoline - it’s a solid chair and has held up remarkably well! I have a vague recollection that the copyright rules allowed furniture reproductions at that time after a certain period had passed but it may have subsequently changed - I can still see their pictures online but the links don’t seem to work.

Same story here, gotten about 10 years from it and held up well. I don’t think it has as good of suspension design as original so might not sit as comfy as a true Eames. The reproductions at the time didn’t all really give great online descriptions… but were 10% the price of original.

I assumed patent expired allowing the look a likes, never considered it a “fake” but maybe they are looking back?

I have not but am going to have the center mount that it swivels on rebuilt because it’s little loose and slightly rocks. I found a guy that will come to my place and do it. Just need to get around to doing it.

Looks Great! Beautiful Space! Definitely on my list of furniture to get when we finally find the right house.

Well not really. The real Eames chair was/is produced by Herman Miller. Famous for countless pieces of office furniture. And yes, they hold value very well as they are a classic in design. The only other chairs semi comparable are Mies’ Barcelona chair or Corbusier’s lounge chairs…the key to furniture is buy a handful of things that are top notch but for the rest….IKEA it is.
