Advice about Rolex USA Service Estimate GMT II 16760

Hello TRF,

I have a GMT II that deserves more love than it gets, and dropped it to the NYC Rolex center this week.

They recommend the following

~ Factory movt service prese prf bzl insert & tube.
~ Case Frame 16760 S/ST
~ Case back S/ST

I would love your advice as to what I can expect returned, ie, how much of my watch will remain after a service like this?

Thanks TRF!

I wonder what they want to charge for all that. It sounds like service is just another way to make money!!!

I don't think $550 is bad.

I say pour yourself a drink, take a big gulp and pay for the service. You will have a Rolex USA service paper that may just pay for the service entirely in the future.

And I have mine from Dallas in '95'. I am glad I have that, thats for sure. Bottom line, if your watch needs parts then the best possible place to have it serviced (IMO) is Rolex USA. They wouldn't tell you that you need a part unless you actually NEED the part. I trust them implicitly.

Thats a bummer that they want to get you a new case. Is that necessary or is that an option? If an option, I'd pass on that one. I like to keep my watches as original as possible.

If its not an option and is mandatory, that a pity. A pity because it really does need it (Rolex wont make it mandatory unless it really needed it) and a pity because you watch will never be the same again. Authentic yes, but without the original case.

This is really bummin me out. I say get a second opinion at an Authorized Rolex Dealer that has a watchmaker on site with a Rolex Parts account. See what they say and go from there.

If it does indeed need a new case then something must be seriously wrong with the current one, when you say "it deserves more love than it gets".....what do you mean......is it a 'beater' in the true sense of the word.....have you really given it a hard time....or is it something else do you think which is causing Rolex to advise a new case is required????

I just realised....that's a "fat lady"......any history of new cases being advised during service for this particular model?

If those are just "recommendations" from Rolex, you don't have to go along with them... You can select the items you want, say only a service and new tube and crown... They usually make these "recommends" if there has been pitting or corrosion at the mating/sealing surfaces.

If they won't perform the service without doing the other work, then they are not recommendations but requirements for the warranty..

If that is the case, you might check with a good watch restorer such as Bob Ridley at www.watchmakers He should be able to finish the mating surfaces for a good seal.

Have to agree with Larry above, and would trust Bobs assessment of whats needed for your watch, far over the RSC for any vintage watch.

There has to be a problem with the case integrity. Depending on how bad it can be lazer welded then machined flat for gaskets. Been there done that but sometimes the pits get real deep and a new case is in order. Rik the watchmaker

If a new case is only $675 I would send it to RSC.

Rikki,

When you mention the case integrity is there any way to see the damage myself? What do you guys think about a new case devaluing the watch in the long run?

Cheers,

Nic

Wow, that seems pricey . . . Over $1,400 for a service on a GMT II "Fat Lady" that can be bought used for $3-4,000.

IMHO, you should seek a different option, especially since, as others have mentioned, you're replacing the original (and thus desirable to a collector) parts with much less desirable new.

The only way to check the case integrity is to take the case back off and all the bezels on the front and look at the metal. If it is severly pitted then it probably won't water test. For the price of a new case you will hurt the collectiblity of it possibly but, you will have a much better looking watch and waterproof. If you plan to keep it and use it go for the new case if you plan to flip it have to old one fixed and keep it original your choice. Rik the watchmaker

I guess the 'Fat Lady' has sung!

If you don't go with a new case and caseback, or have it repaired, the watch will sacrifice in water proofness.

$550 every 7 years is a bargain. Money well spent.

typical

I think you'll get back a like new watch, whether that's what you want or not. They'll do nice work.

Personally, I'd go find a non-Rolex service center. Expect to pay $350-$400 for a thorough service and talk to the tech about what he thinks you really need to do beyond that.

What did you do to the watch that could require this kind of repair? Did you fall off a cliff or get run over by a bus?
