Philosophers, who do you like most?

Since this is a group of individuals much more learned than myself. I’m interested to know who throughout history you think had incredible advice and wisdom.

Marcus Aurelius and Seneca are some of mine.

Please post quotes from those you think are great so we can all enjoy.

Some of my favorites.

“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” - Marcus Aurelius

“All cruelty stems from weakness.” - Seneca

Also, Buddha is a deity, I wasn’t considering religious figures otherwise mine would have been Jesus Christ.

That is not what I said. Nice job at hacking a quote to make it fit your agenda.

Both are religious figures and that’s not what the thread was about.

Thanks for your half assed input and subsequent argumentative, deceitful comment.

Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?

(With your shield or on it) Said by Queen Gorgo to King Leonidas of Sparta as he was leaving to fight the Persians (and surely die) at the battle of Thermopylae, August, 480 BCE.

Short explanation of meaning is it is better to be honorable and die, than betray your friends, your country, or your family.

I like Jean Baudrillard. His idea of ‘hyperreality’ is both fun (he points to examples in cultural stuff like pop music and Disneyland) and compelling to me. Baudrillard argued that our modern perceptions of reality are distorted by media representations and consumer advertising. These bombard us with so many signs and simulations (and in the extreme form, what he called ‘simulacra’) that consensus reality blurs with fiction.

“Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real.”

I’m intrigued at the modern philosopher references. In my mind all the great philosophers have been long dead.

I’d love to learn more about these more modern men and women thinkers.

Slavoj Žižek is another fun modern philosopher I like. He’s kind of a brilliant maniac. I know you don’t click on links, and I’m too stupid to embed a video, but there are hundreds of videos of him. ‘The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology’ should bring up some good clips if not the full film.

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

I confess to not knowing much about philosophers … it was never my area of study or interest.

I have always been more into great minds who came up with theories and put them into practice. Galileo Galilei would be my favourite.

Sorry I can’t contribute much here
