Seeking guidance and wisdom
Hello! Longtime lurker and finally decided to post/make an account.
Seeking some advice and guidance from the fine people of THE Forum. I've got a good relationship with my local AD (BLRO, 116500LN, 116515 Baguette dial are the big ones, a few other pieces as well). I was lucky enough to get a 116500LN black dial right before they were discontinued. I like the watch, but haven't bonded to it quite like my BLRO which I think remains my favorite daily wear/modern Rolex. I'd been pining my local Porsche dealer for an allocation for a car for some time and never thought it would come to fruition, as the model is due to have it's final run this year and next and demand is wild. Well, they got me an allocation to build the car to my spec and I'm elated to say the least. I've toyed with the idea of moving on from the 116500LN to help fund the Porsche....but is that crazy? I know I'll never be able to replace it at the retail price, but maybe my AD could get me a 126500 if I really ended up missing it? I think the only thing giving me pause on moving on from the Daytona is the fact that once it's out of my collection, it's gone for good, at least in 116500 guise. And from everything I've seen in here, you kind of NEVER sell a steel Daytona if you got it. Torn to say the least. Advice and wisdom welcome from the greater good. |

You have not warmed up to it and you have a very exciting opportunity with the Porsche.
Id sell it in a second! Ive had several Daytonas and never have warmed up to them.

Depends on which Porsche allocation you may have?
If it's an SUV for the mall - nope Carrera 4S - take my money

The Porsche is a six-figure car, right? If it were me, I think that if I needed to sell the watch (for maybe 25?) to cover it, then it was out of reach for the moment (regardless of how great an opportunity). In other words, the two couldn’t have anything to do with one another financially for me at least.
Only question is whether you want it in your collection or not and it sounds like you’re on the fence. In which case, think on it. |

The Daytona will outlast the P car. Just saying lol. But if you're really not bonding with it, than I'd move it to free up some money.

Thanks for the replies so far!
The car in question isn't an SUV, it's a GTS 4.0 Cayman. I find them incredibly special as this could very well be the last naturally aspirated, big displacement, flat 6 engine we see in the mid engine platform. With the next car confirmed being EV, I feel the days of these vehicles are numbered regardless of manufacturer. dannyp, I think it's more so a sense of responsibility thing for me rather than financial. Could very well transact on the vehicle without moving on from the watch, but would feel a sense of guilt having something of this magnitude arrive without parting with something. Daytona seemed like so low hanging fruit because you couldn't pry my BLRO from me, but less attached to the 116500LN. laostuh - This is a fair point! Something I've definitly considered. And doesn't require the space, maintenance or insurance. |

If you want the car and are so so on the watch, by all means, sell the watch to help fund the car purchase.

Sounds like you really want the car. I wouldn’t sell the watch for a car but then again I drive a Toyota

I own the same Daytona and I think I’m in the minority here but I say sell it. Sounds like you have the means to get another one grey if you really miss it. IMHO

I agree that you can keep the Daytona forever. Unless it's a weekend car, sooner or later you will get rid of the Porsche. I drove a 911 for 10 years (bought new) and they are a unique driving experience, but the cost of keeping it on the road became excessive. I have a M440 now- much more civilized.

I'd sell the 116500, prepare for possible seller's remorse, and keep the 126500 in mind.
You're not really enjoying the watch right now, and you've got a big purchase coming. I'd do it. |

I’d sell the Daytona for the Porsche. If you just got a call for an allocation I assume it’s either a GT car or a Turbo. You’ve also got probably 6-9 month’s minimum before the car would get here so you have time to figure out if you really want the Daytona. The 992 chassis cars are pretty spectacular to drive. Another thing to keep in mind is Rolex will likely always make a Daytona very similar to the current model. Porsches are getting bigger and turning more into grand touring cars each generation that is unveiled and will eventually be hybrid or full EV.

Go for the Porsche, as you know they are stopping the ones with the petrol engines this year. I own a Cayman 718 and everytime I drive it a huge smile goes on my face. Daytona will come and go and will always be around.

I personally think its the wrong time to sell a 116500. Although nobody can predict the future, the 116520 appreciated in value consistently for several years after being discontinued. They also had a much longer run than the 116500. Id say hold on to it, and if you need to let something go to ease your conscious - I’m sure there’s something else you can let go of with less potential to leave you with future remorse.

You seem excited about the Porsche. The Daytona is just another watch of yours. Ideally, if funds permit, get the Porsche first and then decide if you still wish to move it. But if deep down you're sure, by all means sell it for the most you can get, freeing the money towards something more enjoyable

If you actually live in D.C., forget the Porsche and buy a Subaru.

If you haven't boded with it, you likely won't miss it. I'm sure the PM Daytona you have will fill the void just fine. Also from your second post, it seems you've already mentally put it on the trading block. It's a matter of time now.

If you're not bonding with the Daytona I wouldn't hang on to it just because of the hype surrounding it.

I would Keep the Daytona & maybe consider a less priced sports car. Or as you had mentioned if you sell it maybe your AD can get you the new one.

I’d sell it. It’s just a watch. There’s lots of great watches out there!
