Need some help! Moonphase vs. Racing

Hey all!

Been collecting for a while and I know the drill… but what you like :)

That said, I’ve been torn for a while between the speedy racing, white dial, or the moonphase blue dial. I love them both and would be happy with either.

Any thoughts/votes/things to consider??

Thanks!!

If it helps, this is what I have now:

- James Cameron deepsea
- explorer II, polar dial
- Breitling transocean day date
- Panerai 422

Moonphase since you don't seem to mind big watches

Racing gets my vote. I bought it with the steel bracelet and added the Omega leather strap and delpoyent.

I have owned both and have neither in the collection right now. I prefer the Racing with the white dial or black dial on the OEM black and orange strap. The moon phase is nice but just not as nice to me.

Moonphase is cool but overloaded and its date window is too small.
I vote for Racing black/orange. Or Speedmaster Pro.

Need some help! Moonphase vs. Racing

I’d definitely go moonphase. I’ve got the Blue Side of the Moon and the dial and moonphase are amazing. On the steel version blue dial it’s a sunburst dial and looks incredible. It does everything the racing does and more.

The Moonphase as the Racing model does nothing for me at all.

That moonphase looks so nice. It’s such a nice complement to the speedy.

Blue moonphase is just a stunning watch. However the various niggles I had with it accumulated to the point where I finally sold it a couple months ago. I had serious legibility issues with both the date and chrono functions. The size and thickness are other issues that may or may not matter to you. The racing series thinned it down a bit, which I appreciate.

I went with moonphase recently. My dilemma was blue side aventurine vs Apollo 8 dark side.

Super Racing. I prefer moon phase to be a larger focalpoint.

I have the black dial Moonphase and love it! I have a James Cameron as well like you; seems like we have similar tastes in watches. I don’t think you can go wrong with either; I went with the Moonphase because I’m going to get a Zenith Chronomaster sport eventually for a white dial chrono. Let us know what you pick!

You all are awesome! Thank you and keep the thoughts coming!

I originally fell in love with the moonphase years ago and then sort of lost sight of it. It’s been all about the white racing over the last several months. I’ve tried it on multiple times and absolutely love it. That said, it feels so close looking to my white explorer II…

My only concern on the moonphase is everyone talking about the legibility…. It’s also annoying that it doesn’t come on a bracelet

I’m shocked, never thought you would sell that one, hope you found something nice to replace it.

I thought the same thing, buddy. I still think it's a gorgeous watch, but I actually use the chrono function and the date, and I found it near impossible to read either. I also found the bracelet to be uncomfortable and the overall size and thickness to be just a little more than I wanted.

I went on a search to find a smaller sized, three subdial chrono with a date and put legibility and comfort at the top of my list of needs. I ended up with this IWC and I've been thrilled with it so far.

You can get the Moonphase on a bracelet; mine came on one. If anything you could buy the bracelet separately, which honestly might be better. I am thinking of buying the new Super Racing bracelet for mine since I like the look better than the original Moonphase bracelet anyways. Going to try on a Super Racing in a couple weeks when I’m in Vegas to see if I want to make the jump and pay the $ for the bracelet. May get the mesh bracelet instead as they also offer that in a 22mm end link size and I think it could make it look more modern. I feel like the current Moonphase bracelet is a little dated.

That’s very nice, this is my other chronograph but the Moonphase is still my favourite.

Very cool planet ocean!

I miss the MP in terms of the look. It's such a beautiful watch. If it had a date window like your PO I might have kept it. But I time things with the chrono all the time and man I just really struggled reading the individual minutes on the moonphase. I needed to go back to a 30 minute dial. It's made all the difference.

I really recommend the Planet Ocean Chronograph’s, wears much smaller than the dimensions suggest, fully lumed bezel as this web picture demonstrates.

I would definitely consider their 43.5mm versions. They way Omega measures the diameter they are really 42mm watches. Same deal with the moonphase. It's 44.25mm but really a 43mm. It wore nearly identical to my SD43.

Omega would do themselves a favor if they'd stop including the crown guards in their measurements. Rolex doesn't do that and most other brands don't. A lot of people get scared off by their specs.

Need some help! Moonphase vs. Racing

PO problem is not in width but in thickness. This chronograph is nearly 20mm high.

You all deserve the ending of the story..

Went with the Moonphase and absolutely love it.

Will likely still get the racing one day too :)
